Commercial Description:
This thick, rich ale was brewed with plenty of caramel and roasted malts, and subtly spiced with American Chinook and Willamette hops. It boasts flavors of chocolate and coffee, along with raisins and dried fruit soaked in sherry. We’ve accentuated the natural smoikness of the brew by adding a small amount of beechwood-smoked malt and aging the brew in an oak whiskey barrel, which also adds notes of oak and vanilla.

12oz bottle. Black with a small tan head. Smokey, roasty, vinous, and lightly alcoholic aroma with a touch of cocoa powder. The flavor is roasty and bitter with a light sweetness balanced by all the roast and hops. A touch smoky with a little dried fruit. Med bodied with med-low carbonation. Relatively smooth texture. Quite roasty while not being harsh, and not too sweet or alcoholic. Nice but not much to stand out.

Very good Impy Stout, dark fruity malt and licorice. This beer pours a deep black-brown with a thin, khaki head. The aroma is a mix of a number of flavors, roast, blackberries, alcohol, anise, caramel, a hint of dark chocolate. No particular note dominates, and everything works pretty well together. The flavor has some sweetness, but it’s fairly dry for the style, always appreciated. Once again, I’m impressed by Grand Teton’s bigger offerings.

12 ounce bottle purchased at the Davis Food Co-Op. This has a weird, swampy/musty aroma with some hints of anise. Not really much else going on for this in a good way. Virtually opaque black body with a brown head that dissipates a little faster than I would prefer. Still, pretty attractive. This starts a little roasty with some rubbery flavors. A little roasted in the middle with some burnt notes. Finishes kind of dry. Lacks sweetness, and this just has a really weird burnt rubber flavor and aroma. I can’t get myself into this beer.

355 ml bottle. Pours a dark black with a decent dark-tan head that is clingy. Taste is of roasted malt, chocolate, smoke, caramel, fruit, hops. Slightly bitter aftertaste that is pleasant. Slick, oily body that is slightly thin. Aroma is of chocolate, malt, caramel, fruit, pine, and resin. Well balanced. The alcohol is well hidden. Worth picking up again.

Pours a motor oil dark with small amount of swirling bubbles. Taste is a little bitter chocolate, hops and roasted malt. There’s a little bit of smoke in the aftertaste - must be the whiskey barrel. Lots of lingering taste. Really nice.

12oz bottle. Pours midnight black with a 2 finger creamy brown head that left a coating lacing on the glass. The nose is coffee, roasted malt and baker’s chocolate. The taste is dark fruit, milk chocolate, burnt malt and bitter coffee. Full creamy mouthfeel. Good brew. Very glad they started distributing this in 12oz bottles rather than the huge liter swing tops they used to use.

On tap at the Portland Holiday Ale Festival. Colour... black with a very thick, tan head. Nose... slightly sour, then malty, roasty and choco-coffee-like. Palate... smoky, dark chocolate, holiday spice, dark brown sugar, anise, lightly boozy and a nice long finish.
