Commercial Description:
This thick, rich ale was brewed with plenty of caramel and roasted malts, and subtly spiced with American Chinook and Willamette hops. It boasts flavors of chocolate and coffee, along with raisins and dried fruit soaked in sherry. We’ve accentuated the natural smoikness of the brew by adding a small amount of beechwood-smoked malt and aging the brew in an oak whiskey barrel, which also adds notes of oak and vanilla.

Sampled at RBSG 2006- Grand Tasting. 2005 vintage. Pours dark brown with a brown head. Strong alcohol content to the nose. This is surprising to see that it is only 7.5%. Strong roasted coffee flavor, but the strong alcohol aroma is unusual. Medium-to-thick body.

Bottle via trade with Bück Dich - Thanks Jordan! - Pours black with not much head at all. Aroma is lots of roasted malt, a touch of chocolate, coffee, and some caramel. Flavor includes all of those chocolate, caramel, roasted malts, but also a good deal of dark fruits, raisins, dates, black currant all blend together with some smoke and a touch of oak. Smooth palate although light for an impy stout. This one was a nice bottle to sip over 2 hours though. Enjoyable..

Bottle, 2005: Deep black with a tan head. Muscular texture; lively carbonation. Really nice flavors and aromas of coffee, wood, smoke and chocolate. Rather roasty and peaty, too. Sweet-bitter balance is nice. Bold on both fronts. Dark-fruit notes linger and build. Very nice stuff.

Bottle at RBSG 2006. 2005 Vintage. Dark brown to near black bodied. Nose is roasty, coffee-ish with bittersweet choco notes. Taste is chocolaty with coffee, roasted malts, dark fruit, and faint hops. Body is medium and chewy. Mild carbonation feel to this one. Finishes with more roasted malts, coffee, dark chocolate and dark fruit notes.

RBSG ’06. Black with a thin tan head. Aroma of coffee, dark roasted malts and dark chocolate. Flavor was roasted malt, dark chocolate with a hint of coffee liqueur. A bit thin bodied for an impy stout but still pretty solid.

RBSG 2006 - Grand Tasting. Deep, reddish muddy-brown body with a somewhat oily, fading tan head. Aroma of dark chocolate and cocoa, light butter, and alcohol fumes. Flavor has lots of roast and is somewhat rummy with a medium sweet chocolate cake quality. A decent imperial stout for sure, but doesn’t jump out and grab me like some do.
