Commercial Description:
Bone Warmer Amber Ale, brewed in the "strong ale" tradition, is a beer of great character, with exceptional malt flavor and warming alcohol content. Historically, brewers often drew three different runs from the same barley mash. The first, used for strong ale of "best beer", had the most alcohol. The second was used for less strong "table beer", and the third, a lighter and cheaper "small beer". Our Bone Warmer is brewed the same way, using only the first runnings from an extraordinarily thick, strong mash of Idaho 2-Row Metcalfe and Harrington barley malt, along with dark German munich and caramel malts. We subtly spiced it with "noble" character American Perle and Mt. Hood hops, fermented it at cool temperatures and cold-conditioned it for smoothness and drinkabitlity. The resulting ale is the color of roasting chestnuts, voluptuously malty, only slightly sweet, with a hint of toffee and a warming dry finish. It's an ideal accompaniment to rich meaty stews, wild game, roasted fowl or root vegetables, and aged cheddars.

I was thinking "3.2" in my mind on this one, but maybe it’s a notch higher. It is somewhat mild in flavor and on the vaguely sweet side. From one of them large 25+ oz. bottles.

On Tap at the Old Boise Brew Fest 2007 pours out a amber topped with a tan head. Some malt and sweetness along with a little hop.

At the 2007 Big Beer, Belgians, & Barleywines Festival in Vail. Pours amber with a very faint off white head. Really nice apricot aroma. Fairly sweet for such a thin body by style. This has fewer hop bitterness, but does produce a bit of residual tartness. I’m a bit disappointed by this one.

Some faint molasses whiskey aroma. No head, but an okay beer. Not really what I like - it just seems kind of flat. Odd there is no barrel-aging. A little grainy finish.

1 Liter bottle. Chewed our way through the wax to find the brew is totally flat. It’s dark red-brown, clear, no head.
The aroma is alright. Malty with light notes of toasted grain, toasted nut, caramel and shortbread; Hoppy with moderate note of resin/pine, light notes of dusty dried oregano, candied lemon; Yeasty with a light note of wet cement/basement; Light notes of dried current, alcohol.
The flavor is moderate-to-heavily sweet, lightly bitter and lightly acidic with a long, warm, light-to-moderately sweet, trace acidic finish.
The body is medium, the texture is almost syrupy and the carbonation is dead flat.
Not bad, but it’s stillness seems to dull the whole experience.

Bottle. No head. Body is dark amber. Aroma is moderately malty (caramel, cookie), moderately hoppy (grapefruit, resin, apricot). Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, syrupy texture, flat carbonation, moderately alcoholic. I’m not sure if they expected this to carbonate entirely in the bottle or what...I would have considered taking it back except that it seems all of the bottles are like this. Kind of sad, considering the price.

1LBottle Pours a clear tawney redish color with nary a bubble. Is a "still" strong ale a separate catagory? Fruity plum and vinous notes in the aroma with a hint of the ABV coming through. Flavor was also sweet, of pitted fruit, sweet maltiness and hey...aren’t there supposed to be hops here? More are needed to balance this out a bit more. Overall flavor profile was nice though. Thanks to Jake65 for sharing this one.
