Commercial Description:
Bone Warmer Amber Ale, brewed in the "strong ale" tradition, is a beer of great character, with exceptional malt flavor and warming alcohol content. Historically, brewers often drew three different runs from the same barley mash. The first, used for strong ale of "best beer", had the most alcohol. The second was used for less strong "table beer", and the third, a lighter and cheaper "small beer". Our Bone Warmer is brewed the same way, using only the first runnings from an extraordinarily thick, strong mash of Idaho 2-Row Metcalfe and Harrington barley malt, along with dark German munich and caramel malts. We subtly spiced it with "noble" character American Perle and Mt. Hood hops, fermented it at cool temperatures and cold-conditioned it for smoothness and drinkabitlity. The resulting ale is the color of roasting chestnuts, voluptuously malty, only slightly sweet, with a hint of toffee and a warming dry finish. It's an ideal accompaniment to rich meaty stews, wild game, roasted fowl or root vegetables, and aged cheddars.

1 liter bottle acquired in trade with jimbowood (thanks!). Poured a medium to deep amber / orange color with an averaged sized of white head. Aromas of caramel, roast, light chocolate, and toasted malts. Tastes of caramel, chocolate, some dark fruits, and lighter roast. Another beer that exceeded expectations!

Bottle... Backus’s Backdoor Bash ‘08... Cloudy burnt orange ale with a small, fizzy, off-white head. Lots of caramel and roasted nuts in the nose. Full-bodied and chewy with laid-back carbonation. Mostly sweet; moderately bitter. Vanilla and caramel. Finishes caramelly and sweet. Big time thanks to dchmela for bringing this bottle to the Throwdown!

1 Litre swingtop from the MJRBC. Pours copper with a thin off white head. Smells of sweet malt, some citrus, molasses. Tastes of sweet plums, some molasses, lots of caramel. No bitterness to counteract the bitterness. An English barleywine all the way.

1L Bottle: Misty ruby color, very little carbonation. Large ring of bubbles due to the forced pour but still no head. No breath upon cracking the wax seal swing top either. No carbonation... The nose is very sweet and fruity with strawberry, fructose and other rich sugary notes. Part way contributed by the citrusy smelling hops. The flavor is a bit more balanced, but still resoundingly cloying and fruity. Part of the sweet is the malt, part is the nose of the hop. Needs more carbonation to blend everything together, but it’s not something you can infuse post-purchase. Caramel resin in the tail. Nice beer aside from the carbonation issues.

Bottle. No head. Body is dark amber. Aroma is moderately malty (caramel, cookie), moderately hoppy (grapefruit, resin, apricot). Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, syrupy texture, flat carbonation, moderately alcoholic. I’m not sure if they expected this to carbonate entirely in the bottle or what...I would have considered taking it back except that it seems all of the bottles are like this. Kind of sad, considering the price.

1 liter bottle provided by kp for the tasting: Reddish amber hue with a small frothy head and okay lace. The aroma has notes of grassy noble hops, anise, clove, caramel, peanut, vanilla, and smell sort of vinous. The taste is sweet and honey nut bread with a nice zap of hop spice and round bitterness in support. Run of dark fruits as well. The mouth feel is lush and sharp, warming and enjoyable.

WOW, a big surprise !!! I really dug this and best yet, it is carbonated!
