Commercial Description:
Double Vision Doppelbock highlights our brewery’s wonderful glacial spring water and has been brewed in strict adherence to the Reinheitsgebot*. This beer has a luxurious tan head and a bready aroma with a hint of smoke and is dark leather in color with ruby notes. It is lightly spiced with Liberty hops, an American version of the noble German Hallertau Mittelfruh, and fermented with lager yeast from a monastery brewery near Munich. Doppelbocks were developed by the 17th century Paulist monks of Munich. To help them through the Lenten and Advent fasts, they brewed an especially nourishing dark lager they called "liquid bread" and named "Holy Father." Try pairing with wild game - venison, goose, duck, wild boar- especially when paired with reduction or fruit sauces. It’s also great with aged gruyere, caramel flan, creme brulee, or tart tatin. 8.0% abv. *Reinheitsgebot is the world’s oldest consumer protection law. Written in Bavaria in 1516, it decreed that bere could only be brewed with hops, malted barley, water and yeast. In tribute, Grand Teton Brewing will be releasing four Cellar Reserve beers in 2009, each emphasizing one on the four true beer ingrediants.

Now we’re getting somewhere. This is the year of the Dopplebock. Everyone has one out but this one really shines on the extremity of it all. Very dark brownish amber in color with excellent aromamanship. Thick and latherous. Chewy and creamy. A rather large malt backbone protrudes and claims the very essence of this beer. Chunky chocolate malted milk balls are very enjoyable in liquid form. The finish lasts with lingering bitter cocoa. I mammoth of a beer.

A sweet malty caramel, light smoke aroma. The flavor on this interesting, definitely has some upfront heft to it, as well as sweetness and smoke. Pretty nice, if a tad sweet at first. Quite pricey.

Aroma was German dark bready malts with slight hints of chocolate brownie mix, not overwhelming, flavor however was was a huge surprise,Lucious huge melatoidin malting ,rich chocolate and molassas saturated cake,a little bit of roastedness also, pretty much breaking all the rules of a dopple, but this is one of the best dopples I have ever tasted, the only better might have been a fresh glass of Andesch in Munich. The flavor keep its rich body right to the end. A little bitter in the finish, again unusal for a dopple, but a real treat,a little pricey ,but this one is worth at least one try

1 liter swing top bottle from Bevmo. Pours an opaque dark brown color with a medium khaki head that has good retention and some lacing. The aroma is sweet with roasted malts and molasses. The flavor is similar to the aroma, plenty of molasses, brown sugar, licorice, dark roasted malts and perhaps some charcoal. The mouthfeel is full and creamy smooth. The finish is long with lingering molasses. This is one fine dopplebock, one of the best of its style.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with an average, rocky light brown head, somewhat lasting with fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cookie, caramel, toffee), light hop (herbs), average yeast (dough, broth) with notes of alcohol, oak, brown sugar, and plum. Full bodied, creamy texture, lively carbonation, and an astringent finish. Long duration, heavy sweetness, light acidity and bitterness.

Bottle… This beer rocks!… Pours nearly black with a mid-sized, creamy, lightly tanned head. Fantastic retention. The aroma is very nice. Rich mocha nose with a touch of ethanol. Full-bodied and silky with gentle carbonation. This has the aroma, the mouthfeel and all the flavor of an imperial porter – big, malty, mocha sweetness. A semblance of balance is provided by modest, minerally bitterness. Chocolaty, well-roasted, mildly bitter finish. Not really what I was expecting from a doppelbock, but this is a best-of-show site, so I either like the beer or I don’t. I love it!

Sampled on 3/25/2009. This dopplebock pours a eclipse black color form a 1 litter swing-top bottle. Medium to small sized beige foamy head with nice retention and good lacing. The aroma is chocolate, coffee, some vanilla, and dark fruits. A medium bodied dopplebock. The malts are chocolate, coffee, roasty malts, touch of toffee and vanilla. The hops are earthy and floral. Nice balance. Very smooth taste, nearly creamy. Very nice soft carbonation. Great sipping beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

1L Swingtop: Pours a dark chewy raisin color with a nice fluffy brown head and tons of lacing. The nose is fresh and fruity with lots of cherry, dark chocolate, raisin, oak and smoky rye. The flavor is nice and chewy; more dark dried fruits and rich caramel malts. Nice carob note in the tail with a very balanced body and creamy mouthfeel. A tiny bit vegetal but it’s offset by the bright acidity from the heavier roasted malts and clean fresh hops. Probably my favorite of the Cellar Reserve series.
