Commercial Description:
In the days before refrigeration, brewing was difficult or impossible in the warm summer months, and March was the time a big brew was made as a supply for summer. This March or marzen beer was brewed to a fairly high gravity for protection against spoilage as it was stored away in cool cellars or caves. At the end of the summer, when the new brewing season began, any beer left in storage was ceremoniously consumed. The pouring of this special marzen coincided with the fall harvest festival, making for one big party. The traditional German marzen is a medium-strong, reddish amber lager, with a malty body and aroma, which has been lagered, or conditioned, an unusually long time. Our Fest Bier is offered in honor of the old ways. We brewed it in early January with German Pilsner and Vienna malts, hopped it with German Hallertaus, and fermented it at low temperatures with lager yeast from a monastery brewery near Munich. It fermented for weeks in our "cellar," then, in March, it was bottle-conditioned and moved to cold storage for further aging, until its release in late summer. The reddish Vienna malts in this beer provide a spicy sweetness and some caramel notes that perfectly complement roast or grilled chicken, pizza, or pasta with red sauce. 7 % alcohol by volume.

Average ruby pour with no head at all really. Chunky sediment pour. Yeasty lemon smell. A hint on the watery side in the flavor. Smell and flavor don’t really match. Highly carbonated.

750ml bottle. 2007. Heavy, bordering on harshness, malt character make this marzen taste off. Light amber body below a spare head that diminishes. The aroma is grainy with some bread and canned corn. The flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter and lightly acidic. Medium body has a creamy texture.

Bottle. 75cl. [Tasting @ Ølbaren, Copenhagen]. Unclear light to medium amber orange color with a small, fizzy, virtually none lacing, fully diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, roasted. Flavor is moderate to light heavy sweet and light bitter with a average duration. Body is light to medium, texture is watery, carbonation is soft. (110308)

Bach Home Again Tasting - 750ml bottle - 2007 version: Clear copper pour with a filmy head that dissipates. Soft caramel nose offers light hay and bready notes. The body is more pronounced, with heavier caramel malts and an earthy yeast character. The finishes leads into a rye spicy note that lingers.

bottle shared at tasting with Dewbrewer. Thank you!
Pours a rich, cloudy amber with not much head mustering up in my sample. Smell is malty toastiness, but light and a fair amount of hops in the nose too for the style. Taste is somewhat thin with a uniquely prominent lemony hop characteristic in the end. Thin bodied overall, and mild maltiness. Different from what I’d expect of the style, but not bad.

1 liter bottle provided by kp for the tasting: Coppery hue with no head or lace, still looking. The aroma has notes of honey, heather, apricot, toasted bread, pepper, herbs, and chalky yeast esters. The taste is mild fruit over layers of caramel and bread. Flowery and chewy yeast finish. The mouth feel is almost flat and lifeless, some warming on the finish. Well, it is different. Would like to have tried a fresher and carbonated bottle.

Bottle. A dark golden beer with a white head. The aroma and taste is of sweet malt, corn, caramel and rye bread. Medium to full body with a sweet corn finish.
