Commercial Description:
In the days before refrigeration, brewing was difficult or impossible in the warm summer months, and March was the time a big brew was made as a supply for summer. This March or marzen beer was brewed to a fairly high gravity for protection against spoilage as it was stored away in cool cellars or caves. At the end of the summer, when the new brewing season began, any beer left in storage was ceremoniously consumed. The pouring of this special marzen coincided with the fall harvest festival, making for one big party. The traditional German marzen is a medium-strong, reddish amber lager, with a malty body and aroma, which has been lagered, or conditioned, an unusually long time. Our Fest Bier is offered in honor of the old ways. We brewed it in early January with German Pilsner and Vienna malts, hopped it with German Hallertaus, and fermented it at low temperatures with lager yeast from a monastery brewery near Munich. It fermented for weeks in our "cellar," then, in March, it was bottle-conditioned and moved to cold storage for further aging, until its release in late summer. The reddish Vienna malts in this beer provide a spicy sweetness and some caramel notes that perfectly complement roast or grilled chicken, pizza, or pasta with red sauce. 7 % alcohol by volume.

Bottled. Hazy dark amber coloured. with some strange and unpleasant black floaties. Malty caramel aroma. Sweetish bready malt and caramel flavour. Some fruity notes. Medium bodied. Not clean enough to be really good.

Appearance: Pours a clear, medium amber body. Zilch for carbonation. Smell: Sweet-smelling aroma of candy apples with a sprinkling of spice. Taste: Sweetish caramel maltiness. Tart Golden Delicious apple fruitiness with a touch of acidity. A swig of booze. Some light bitterness holds till the finish. Mouthfeel: Light-bodied. Completely flat. Drinkability: Would be nice if it had some (any) carbonation, but as it stands...

1 quart, 1.8 fl. oz. red wax-enveloped swing-top bottle. Card attached stamped "APR 26, 2007". Pours a disgustingly still apple cider appearance; even with an extremely hard pour. Disappointing. (My previous MJ Rare Beer Club experience with Grand Teton’s Double IPA also had ZERO head. So sad...) Caramel malt aroma with some toasted grain. Mild. Caramel flavor and some soft fruity notes on the palate. Subtle sour twinge. Quiet spice note in the aftertaste. I keep coming back to "disappointing". Disheartening to "waste" a RBC monthly selection on flat beer.

1 litre swing top bottle poured a clear copper with nearly no head. Aromas of carmel, fruitiness and yeast. Palate was light bodied and smooth. Flavors of carmel, light fruitiness and bread with a smooth lightly bitter finish.

Looks good. A bit of malt in the aroma. The flavor is very malty from the start yet it has a fresh bite and is pretty good I think. One I would consider again.
