Commercial Description:
In the days before refrigeration, brewing was difficult or impossible in the warm summer months, and March was the time a big brew was made as a supply for summer. This March or marzen beer was brewed to a fairly high gravity for protection against spoilage as it was stored away in cool cellars or caves. At the end of the summer, when the new brewing season began, any beer left in storage was ceremoniously consumed. The pouring of this special marzen coincided with the fall harvest festival, making for one big party. The traditional German marzen is a medium-strong, reddish amber lager, with a malty body and aroma, which has been lagered, or conditioned, an unusually long time. Our Fest Bier is offered in honor of the old ways. We brewed it in early January with German Pilsner and Vienna malts, hopped it with German Hallertaus, and fermented it at low temperatures with lager yeast from a monastery brewery near Munich. It fermented for weeks in our "cellar," then, in March, it was bottle-conditioned and moved to cold storage for further aging, until its release in late summer. The reddish Vienna malts in this beer provide a spicy sweetness and some caramel notes that perfectly complement roast or grilled chicken, pizza, or pasta with red sauce. 7 % alcohol by volume.

1 L swing-top bottle caked in red wax purchased at Springs Liquor Outlet. Pours slightly hazy amber with a small, fizzy, light brown head, somewhat lasting with fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (caramel, bread, roasted grain), light hops (herbs), average yeast (sweat, dough) with notes of butter and cardboard. Medium bodied, sticky texture, average carbonation, and a metallic finish. Average duration, moderate sweetness, light acidity and bitterness.

1Liter bottle-pours a dissipating to clumpy light tan head that laces and hazy copper/brown color. Aroma is sweet caramel-medium malt, medium fruit, bready, grain. Taste follows with some earthy and flowery-hops that by the finish balances/reduces the sweetness. Medium body. OK/mild carbonation.

Bottle: Pours a muddy brownish red with no head and no lacing. Nose is light with earthy and malt tones. Tastes musty and earthy with a little malt accent and light spices. There is a little fruity sweetness, but the earthiness is a bit dominant.

Old fallen cedar trees?? Hmmm never had one of those. The nose is subtle as is the carbonation. But they are both there. Standard pint glass and aggressive poor gave a head of about 1.5 inches. I was pouring from a growler filled at brewery. Flavoring seems accurately described below.

Bottle: No fizz upon opening (even though the wax was a as a bitch to get through). Pours a coppery bronze color with no head, no carbonation. The nose is nearly blank, if there were more carbonation it would be more up front. Some light sweetness and fruitiness, but subtle. The flavor is fairly nice, balanced, decent acidity to compliment the caramelly notes, but gall darnit, it just doesn’t have any carbonation. Finishes clean and balanced. Tasty drinking, but....

1L Bottle pours a clear deep copper with barly a trace of a head even after a rather agressive pour. A few turpid swirls of the glass coaxes just enough to leave a few traces of lacing. Aroma is cidery and spicy. A bit soapy as well. Flavor is of old fallen cedar trees and musty earthy sweet over ripe apples and pears. A touch of cinnamon and again a litle detergent or soap. Very thin and light and way soft on the carbonation. Just cant get excited about yet another "cellar reserve" installment from a local brewer that just cant quite impress me.

RBSG 2007 Grand Tasting. Skyview ticks another state for me! Clear golden brown with almost no head. Lightly sweet malt nose, caramel and light spice. Very mild flavor - is this a mild? Guess not. Light body, a bit sweet, caramel and toffee.

Stopped at the Grand Teton Brewing Company near Victor, Idaho and picked up three of the Cellar Reserve brews for the RBSG ’07 Grand Tasting. The brewery allowed us to bring the Fest Bier to the Grand Tasting before the rest of the market received it. The Fest Bier pours a semi-hazy caramel amber brew with an average off-white head. Aroma of sweet caramel, toffee, apricots and a slight Hawaiian bread character. Taste is slightly sweet with more flavors of caramel, toffee and grassy hops. Finish is a little sweet with a slight apricot aftertaste.
