Commercial Description:
In the days before refrigeration, brewing was difficult or impossible in the warm summer months, and March was the time a big brew was made as a supply for summer. This March or marzen beer was brewed to a fairly high gravity for protection against spoilage as it was stored away in cool cellars or caves. At the end of the summer, when the new brewing season began, any beer left in storage was ceremoniously consumed. The pouring of this special marzen coincided with the fall harvest festival, making for one big party. The traditional German marzen is a medium-strong, reddish amber lager, with a malty body and aroma, which has been lagered, or conditioned, an unusually long time. Our Fest Bier is offered in honor of the old ways. We brewed it in early January with German Pilsner and Vienna malts, hopped it with German Hallertaus, and fermented it at low temperatures with lager yeast from a monastery brewery near Munich. It fermented for weeks in our "cellar," then, in March, it was bottle-conditioned and moved to cold storage for further aging, until its release in late summer. The reddish Vienna malts in this beer provide a spicy sweetness and some caramel notes that perfectly complement roast or grilled chicken, pizza, or pasta with red sauce. 7 % alcohol by volume.

Bottled. Hazy dark amber coloured. with some strange and unpleasant black floaties. Malty caramel aroma. Sweetish bready malt and caramel flavour. Some fruity notes. Medium bodied. Not clean enough to be really good.

Bottle from the Michael Jackson Rare Beer Club. Swing-top with red wax seal. Pours a still amber with only spotty large bubble. Nose is caramel, buttery biscuit, light spicy hops and fruit notes. taste is sweet and spicy. Spicy, earthy hops, sweet malts, caramel, hints of toffee and fruit. Body is light-medium and slick. Alcohol begins to show towards the end. The finish results in more sweet malty flavors, chewy caramel, spicy hops, ripe fruits, light toffee and some bready notes.

Good malty caramel nose, hints of grassy and light fruits. Pours a reddish amber with nice white head. Carmel malts, buttery, with a lot of grassy hops, caramelized apples, sweet with a dry bitter finish. Not bad for a marzen.

Average ruby pour with no head at all really. Chunky sediment pour. Yeasty lemon smell. A hint on the watery side in the flavor. Smell and flavor don’t really match. Highly carbonated.

750ml bottle. 2007. Heavy, bordering on harshness, malt character make this marzen taste off. Light amber body below a spare head that diminishes. The aroma is grainy with some bread and canned corn. The flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter and lightly acidic. Medium body has a creamy texture.
