Commercial Description:
Lost Continent Double IPA has an astonishing three pounds of hops per barrel in the kettle and another pound per barrel of "dry-hops" added after fermentation, bringing this beer to 90+ IBUs. Starting with an original gravity of 22˚ Plato (1.088 SG), this is a full-bodied beer weighing in at 8.0% ABV. The hops provide citrusy, resinous spiciness, making this beer a great match for any bold food. Try it with prime rib, Cajun blackened pork or chicken, Thai, Indian or Vietnamese cuisine.

Bottle, from Bevmo. Really nice looking beer. Deep amber color. Really hazy, yeasty pour. Aroma is of citrus and spice. Flavor is really really sweet. Muted hops, and a really thick mouthfeel. Not bad, not great. Reminded me of 90 minute IPA, actually.

Bright orange hued cloudy straw body. Sickly sweet malt backbone lowlighted by caramel. Almost zero carbonation. Astringent and soapy with smackdown of stewed compost-bin veggies.

Bottle: Pours a hazy orange color with a white head. The nose is sweet and hoppy with lots of earthy notes, alcohol and syrupy maltiness. The flavor shows a lot of promise in the bitterness department but the large body overpowers this and it seems a little middle-of-the-road for a IIPA. I had high hopes for this one, being one of their highest gravity beers to date. Sweeter finish and a thick overall impression.

12oz Bottle Pours out a hazy orange topped with a small sand head. Lots of caramel sweetness along with some pine hops. Taste more of the sweetness, some melon and a nice grapefruit peel bitterness on the end.

This is fairly enjoyable, fairly rich with a firm character, but too sweet and one-dimensional. Pale orange, a little hazy, it has a small off-white head that dissipates slowly to a foamy ring and wisps. It leaves a tiny bit of lace. The aroma is very fresh grapefruit juice with fresh orange juice and tangerine rind over some raisiny alcohol. The taste is extremely sweet and mostly just grapefruit and orange. There is a little hint of bitterness and light spiciness, both mostly in the finish and aftertaste. The syrupy sweetness completely are overpows them both. Alcohol is evident but not too much. It’s oily, syrupy, and heavy. The flavours are good and strong, never degarding, but tastes only like slightly alcoholic orange-grapefruit syrup. It lacks complexity or interest or balance.

Pours orange. Nose is sweet malt first, then big hops. Citrus and pine, hints of floral hops. Flavor is toasted and sweet caramel with lingering bitter hops.

10/2/09 notes: poured at GABF Saturday. Color is vibrant orange, with an average head. Aroma is fruity-tangerine, with orange and bubble gum-like esters. Flavor starts bold and hoppy, with a pleasant balanced hop finish. Malt is present throughout, adding buttery sweetness, and is tastefully set back against the hops. I’d like to try this again.

Bottle from BevMo, La Mesa. Hazy, medium amber in color. Slightly sweet highly hopped aroma. Some spiciness. Quite sweet up front. Nicely hopped. Some alcohol. Finish has bitterness and a strong roasty quality.
