Commercial Description:
Lost Continent Double IPA has an astonishing three pounds of hops per barrel in the kettle and another pound per barrel of "dry-hops" added after fermentation, bringing this beer to 90+ IBUs. Starting with an original gravity of 22˚ Plato (1.088 SG), this is a full-bodied beer weighing in at 8.0% ABV. The hops provide citrusy, resinous spiciness, making this beer a great match for any bold food. Try it with prime rib, Cajun blackened pork or chicken, Thai, Indian or Vietnamese cuisine.

On tap during Hopfest at Brouwer’s. Pours an orange amber with no head. Aroma is a bit sour citrus. Taste is slightly lactic and funky, with apparent alcohol, pines, and bubblegum. All the flavors seem to be competing.

Bottle thanks to ditmier. Pour is a wonderful looking cloudy orange with a quickly dissipating white head. Aroma is citrus and pine hops with a nice caramel malt backbone. Flavor is nice malt/hops combo up front; mostly pine hop. The finish is a bit chemical but also nicely hoppy. This exceeded my expectations a little bit. Solid brew

A hazy amber ale with a thin light moka head. In aroma, bready malt and floral c-hops. In mouth, a good biscuitty malt, light c-hops, graperfruits, pinhey, but overall, a very light I2PA. Bottle from Bottle Barn, 1.99$, sampled August 20, 2009.

Bottle - thanks ditmier. Pours a hazy orange color with a small, creamy beige head. Sweet and hoppy aroma, full of citrus and florals. Lots of intense, sweet grapefruit. Flavor is a wet-hopped floral medley with much less citrus than the aroma. Still zesty, but it loses the citrus and becomes slightly malty (caramel?) and the abv becomes noticable. Floral, pucking hops finish.

nice packaging... pours out more than hazy though not quite cloudy an orange shade of brown. it is capped by a large soft frothy light beige head and loads of drippy lacing. the smell of caramel malty sweetness stands out in front of bubblegum, orange pith, mild pine, citrus-like sourness and a note of toasted peanut. this tastes more like an aged dry barleywine... very well balanced if not a bit more heavy on the malt.... exactly what i don’t like in a ’supposed’ hoppy style. it lacks that bitter punch... the flavor almost mirrors the aroma...orange/citrus sourness and grain really stand out before a dry-ish finish. it has a lot of flavors going on but they just seem timid and muted. the body is medium though leaning heavily on full. it is very creamy, rich and nearly cloying since it doesn’t have any bitterness... 6/4/6/3/13/3.2

Appearance: Pours out a clearish, orange-amber body with a thin, whitish head that disperses out into a small ring fairly quickly. Smell: Notably sweet-scented caramel maltiness reaches the nose first followed by citrusy, fruity, piney hop notes and a tiny dash of quality alcohol. Taste: Toasted grainy maltiness wrapped up in plenty of toothsome crystal and candied caramel sweetness. Hearty hoppiness tasting of ruby red grapefruit, papayas, and white pine sap. While you do get a sturdy bitterness, sure, there’s enough gooey maltiness present that it comes across as no more than easy-going and downright smooth. Vein of peppery alcohol persistently running through the flavor. Warming, bittersweet finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation. There’s a slight sugary stickiness to the mouthfeel. Drinkability: Lost Continent sports a very robust maltiness and a high degree of balance; two things many people aren’t really looking for at all in a Double IPA. I can easily picture a lot of frowny-faced hopheads out there, but this one should please the maltmouths.

Sampled on 9/5/2009. This Imperial IPA pours a deep orange gold color from a 12oz bottle. Medium sized white foamy head, nice lacing and decent retention. The aroma is orange and tangerine with some citrusy hops. A medium bodied Imperial IPA. The malts are fruity and sweet with a whole bunch of citrus. The hops are citrusy and grapefruit. Nice balance. Kind of sweet and citrusy. The bitterness is kind of hidden, doesn’t smack you in the face but kind of grows on you. Nice balance. More to the malt side, with a nice dose of tangerine and orange. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.
