Commercial Description:
In Germany, strong lagers are called “bocks” or “bock biers.” There is some dispute over the origin of the designation. “Bock” in German also means goat, and that animal often appears on labels as a symbol of the style. Some say bocks are brewed for the season of Capricorn, which includes Christmas, while others say simply that the beer has the kick of a goat. The historically-minded among us at Grand Teton like to credit the originators of the style, the people of Einbeck, in Northern Germany. The beers that gave Einbeck the nickname “City of Beer” were first brewed in the 14th and 15th centuries. They were brewed very strong because they were sent long distances, fermenting on the way. Before long, Einbeck, pronounced Ein-bock by the southerners of Bavaria, became famous for its strong beers, which came to be known simply as “bocks.” Einbeck is a beautiful medieval city, architecturally distinctive for the one story--or taller--arches that grace each house. These arches allowed entry of the town brew kettle, which passed from house to house according to a lottery held each year on May 1st. A pale bock brewed to commemorate the lottery became the city’s most celebrated beer—Maibock. Our version is squarely in the Einbeck tradition. We used German Pilsner malt for a clean, slightly sweet flavor, then subtly spiced the brew with German Hallertau hops. We fermented with lager yeast from a monastery brewery near Munich, and allowed it to ferment and condition for more than two months for a smooth yet crisp character. Try Mammoth Maibock as an aperitif to stimulate the taste buds, or with any flavorful fish, such as trout or salmon. 6.8% alcohol by volume.

Bottled. A hazy orange beer with a thin beige head. The aroma is sweet malty with strong notes of fresh fruit as well as medium notes of over ripe fruits and alcohol - the aroma reminds me of a Barley Wine. The flavor is sweet malty with a metallic alcohol note, that burns the tongue, leading to a dry finish. The body is thin - is that due to a low level of residual sugar?

1 liter wax-dipped swingtop bought in Jackson, WY some time ago. Pours a cloudy orange body with a large foamy head. The aroma was awesome; tons of malts, alcohol, and a really powerful fruity aspect. Really has a nice nose. The flavor was very smooth and good; bready and rich malts, a ton of fruit, mostly apple and nuts, some floral hops and grains. Also some sweet caramel malt. Very full flavor and mouthfeel. I enjoyed this one a lot. A nice lager, lots to enjoy.

1 Liter Brewed 1/25/07 I recieved this bottle in another great trade with BitterBill, thanks again Bill! This comes in another of those big 1 liter was topped bottles. Mammoth Maibock pours a slightly hazed deep golden with orange hues throughout. Huge carbonation bubbles rise to the surface keeping the dense two finger eggshell white head going. As the head eventually falls to a finger it leaves streaked lacing down the mug. The nose is strictly malt driven. The base flashes between freshly husked grains and slightly sweet grains. There seems to be a mild green apple and floral honey aroma coming from the depths that manages to add a touch more sweetness. The graininess is clean and fresh. This is a very inviting maibock and fits the style well. Big clean fresh graininess right off the bat that lasts from the second it hits the tongue through the swallow. The grain becomes sweet mid palate and finishes with a touch of bitterness. The mild green apple and honey are both in the flavor but are barely noticeable. This is a strong example of the style and one I wouldn’t hesitate to drink again. The mouthfeel is just right. Body is on the lighter side of medium and moves through rather quickly leaving a slight bitterness behind. Some residual sweetness is left behind as well. Mammoth Maibock is an easy one to put away. My mug is disappearing far too quickly. It’s a good thing this comes in a liter bottle. Another good beer from the guys over at Grand Teton. I’ve been impressed with all their beers up to this point. They did a great job with a style not many American breweries try and tackle. A good example of the style. Thanks for the taste Bill! 4/20/07

Bottle: Golden color, nice white head and plenty of lacing. Nose of light fruity and earthy hops, some subtle yeast and grape notes. The flavor is clean, sharp fruit and light yeast. A straight forward bock but it’s just not that good. I don’t usually love heller bocks, this is no exception.

Bottled. Thanks to omhper. Pours out in a hazy bronze colour with a medium-sized lasting white foam. Biscuity and bready malty aroma with interesting hop components of pepper, berries, caramel and roasted. nuts. Full malty flavour of bread, nuts, pale malts, pears and peppery alcohol. Malty flavour of caramel, dried fruit, white bread and subtle but lingering spicy and grassy hops. Nice pale bock!

Bottled. Cloudy pale orange, mid-sized head. Buttery malt aroma. Sweet with medium-full body. A good amount of caramelly malt gives a firm, rounded mouthfeel. Some butterscotch is there bo accompany the notes of cranberry and grass. Restrained bitterness. A solid malty gently warming beer.
