Grand Teton XX Mountainberry Double Wheat Ale

Huge ass flip top waxed bottle courtesy of BOLTZ7555 – thanks J! Pours a cloudy burnt orange color with a 3 finger dense tan head that results in delicate lacing. The nose is sweet fruit, molasses and caramel. The taste is follows the aroma fairly close with a interesting boozy sourish finish. Comes off more like a barleywine. Medium mouthfeel. Interesting beer. Not horrible, but not very good and not something I want to drink a liter of that’s for sure. Thanks for the opportunity to try this J!

Lots of sweetness in the nose. Wheat malts, fruity berries, and the hint of a buggy note. Pours hazy amber with a giant head and visible sediment. Sweet and wheaty with lots of fruit - both fresh and somewhat artificial. A touch of twang in the finish and noticeable alcohol too. Highly carbonated. Glad I finally got it out of the fridge. This bad boy took up a lot of room, plus it was a BITCH to open.

OK, so I finally cracked this May 2008 one liter bottle. Pours a cloudy red-brown color with a large creamy beige head. The aroma is sweet; lots of berries and fruit. The flavor is dominated by a rich fruitiness; lots of sweet berries, blueberry being dominant and very noticeable. Lots of rich malts and dry wheat as well. Very natural and pretty nice.

Aroma was definitely berry and malting,really could not pick out anything wheaty about it, very turbid cloudiness to it, reminded me of the fresh squeezed apple juice turbidity you see in a clear glass taste was sweet jam beery and a little hint of wheat tartness. Seems like a beer women would go for, certainly much better then say a Leinies Berry,just not my style

1L flip-top with some seriously difficult purple wax over it. Poured deep coppery-amber with a thick cap of rose(faint)-tinted beige head. The aroma picked up a broad array of berries that I could only pull out blueberries from.. kinda smelled like they were all from concentrate.. caramel backing.. the wheat showed with spicy accents and dusty appeal.. this grew on me as it warmed. The flavor was also carried by the berries of mixed origin.. darker berry meat met caramel at the core.. wheaty tartness and berry skins all over the edges giving a tart, engaging impression.. finished a little sharp when the alcohol caught up. Medium-bodied with low-to-moderate carbonation on the palate.. OK feel overall.

Mountainberry Double Wheat pours a murky garnet but when backlit is fairly clear and takes on the color of cranberry juice. An immense three finger off white head grew on the pour and fell painfully slow leaving chunky lacing on its way down. Carbonation bubbles rush to the surface keeping the head right where it’s at. The second pour brings some chunky yeast floating through the body and quickly dropping to the bottom of the mug. Things are starting off very well. The first thing I catch in the nose, although not the most pronounced, is a touch of spicy yeastiness. There’s a wonderful tart huckleberry tartness up front that stands out the most out of the three berries used. Ghost like blueberry flashes in here and there. There is a solid wheat twang underneath all this letting me know exactly what this beer is; a strong wheat. I’m not sure I can pick out the marionberry although I can’t really say I know what marionberries smell like anyways. The berriness seems to compliment the wheat instead of taking over like some other fruit beers tend to do. The flavor is just like the aroma suggested. A crisp wheat twang starts things off and leads throughout. The blueberries are more noticeable in the flavor then in the aroma and when joined by the huckleberry form a great accompaniment to the wheat. The spiciness of the yeast shows up on the swallow to add some complexity. There is a nice tartness that makes this Mountainberry very refreshing. This has a unique flavor profile that I can’t get enough of; of course I’m crazy about blueberries. This beer gets really good as it sits in the glass. The mouthfeel is right where it should be. The carbonation is snappy and keeps this beer moving at a quick pace. As this beer works through the body is moderate and creamy. I could see myself drinking a lot of this during the summer. Goes down very easily and is a refreshing, although the abv is up there. Mountainberry is another high quality brew from Grand Teton. I can’t get enough of their beers. This is an interesting take on a wheat beer and they did a great job with it. Thanks again for the treat Bill! 6/22/08

1 liter swingtop from Plaza Liquors - Pours a deep amber color with a one and a half finger thick off white head. Light lacing. Aroma is berries and light wheat malt. Flavor is berries and caramel malt. Has a slight astringent berry aftertaste. Medium body. Worth a try.

Bottle. Head is initially large, creamy, off-white, mostly lasting. Body is medium reddish-amber. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain), with a note of artificial berry syrup. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium to full body, syrupy/creamy texture, lively/soft carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic. More soda pop than beer.
