Commercial Description:
Sweetgrass India Pale Ale has been a GTBC staple since early 2002. Brewed solidly in the American IPA style, Sweetgrass is crisp and fragrant with a generous yet smooth hop character. XX Sweetgrass is all that twice over, with double the malt and double the hops--an astonishing three pounds per barrel in the kettle and another pound per barrel of "dry-hops" added after fermentation. The hops provide citrusy, resinous spiciness, making this beer a great match for any bold, flavorful food.

Golden to orange in color with a smaller ecru colored head. Big syrupy scent. Malt, honey caramel, citrus and ripe fruit in the aroma. Some higher alcohols and a bit of toasted nuts also float in and out. Fruity flavors dominate with light fruit of currants, plums and apricots. Some alcohol present with a stewed fruit or rum type quality. Flavors seem stronger than the 7.6% stated abv. If you like a strong flavored IIPA this should be your cup of juice. I like it even-though there are some rather crude characteristics at time.

Bottle. Moderate malt note of caramel, orange for the hops, heavy soap for the yeast, with pepper and berry in the background. Head is frothy, white with good lacing and is mostly lasting. Color is hazy orange/tan. Flavor starts moderately sweet and very lightly acidic, then finishes lightly acidic and moderately bitter. Palate is medium, oily and has soft carbonation. It looks great and a good DIPA, but a few off aspects threw it off a bit. The palate is pretty good as well.

Sample from November 21, 2008 beer club meeting. Darker than the standard Sweetgrass IPA. More cloudy. Aroma is more solid. Palate is thin, but alcoholic! Very well done. Nice and hoppy and a little sweet. Not as hash as most double IPAs.

Liter flip top bottle that is oddly enough then wax dipped courtesy of sebletitje. My 100th IIPA rating, thanks Sebastian. Pours clear copper with half inch tan head. The aroma is a pleasing mix of pine, grassiness and sweet crystal malts. More draws bring up less hoppiness and more malts. The taste has moderate hops with bitterness coming from pine and grassy resiny hops to go along with a solid backbone of crystal malt sweetness. This is a thick juicy IPA and more of a mild average IIPA.

courtesy of vasdef42. Pours amber/brown, beige head. Aroma, fruity and hoppy. Taste, amazingly, the hoppy taste was rather low for a DIPA, but remained highly enjoyable. Hoppy with some light bitterness, with nice citrusy notes and resinous. Very smooth, but overall weak for what it claims to be. Finish is hoppy and malty.

2008 vintage from douglas88 in trade- many thanks sir! Served in tulip- poured slightly turbid glazed over copper with orange tint, low carbonation, hearty foamy white head formed and laced very nicely. Aroma of pine and citrus, with more than enough hops for everyone. Hits the mouth with a medium body, malt is a bit underwhelming, hops are a bit weak for a double IPA but the mouthfeel is very nice. Finish has a bit of cream and hop twang. Good stuff maynard!!!

Bottle... NFL Day at dchmela’s in O-Town... Lightly hazed, burnt orange ale with a huge, frothy, off-white head. Fantastic, rocky retention. The aroma presents resinous hops and tons of caramel malt. Full-bodied and velvety with gentle carbonation. Sweet, black tea... bitterness comes in late. Malty/sweet, tongue-numbing finish. Thanks to douglas88 for providing this bottle of beer!
