Commercial Description:
Sweetgrass India Pale Ale has been a GTBC staple since early 2002. Brewed solidly in the American IPA style, Sweetgrass is crisp and fragrant with a generous yet smooth hop character. XX Sweetgrass is all that twice over, with double the malt and double the hops--an astonishing three pounds per barrel in the kettle and another pound per barrel of "dry-hops" added after fermentation. The hops provide citrusy, resinous spiciness, making this beer a great match for any bold, flavorful food.

1L bottle with waxed swing top (very annoying to open). Pours a clear golden amber with a big creamy white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is sweet lemoney fruits and grassy hops with a bit of alcohol.

The flavor is some sweet caramel malt and fruits initially, followed by a big grassy, piney hop bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and syrupy with smooth carbonation.

Overall, a decent beer. It has a lot of nice components but doesn’t seem to mesh well to me.

Bottle from miketd’s tasting

I believe this came from Mike as well. Coming from a brewery that I have never heard of this was a nice discovery. It is not the best western IPA but if it were available in my area as the local brew it would certainly be a choice for summer evenings.

Aroma / Appearance - A one finger white head surged above a carbonated amber brown body. The IPA presented itself with florally bright notes including resin and sweetness. Without being over the top it was balanced.

Flavor / Palate - Bittersweet caramel, butterscotch and pine blended into a drinkable balanced brew. One of those sessionable releases that you get in every part of the country it is a great daily drinker but not one to seek out aggressively.

1l flip-top bottle. Thanks to GrbDg for sharing. Aroma: Sweet maltiness with a light brown sugar note. Some light piney and citrus notes. Appearance: Medium amber in color and clear. Off-white head was small and foamy with fair retention. Fair lacing. Flavor: Fairly sweet maltiness up front with caramel and a light graininess. Pine and resin hop notes. Bitterness kicks in just enough to balance. Nice dry finish. Palate: Medium bodied. Moderate carbonation. Light alcohol warming in back of mouth. Overall: A pleasant and well balanced IIPA.

33.8 oz bottle-Pours a medium amber body with a nice tight small off white head. Aroma of hops, sweetness, and pine. Taste of hops, sweetness, caramel, and a nice sweet finish along with some dryness. This medium bodied brew is very well balanced and quite delicious.

Aroma is a sweet hop scent with a little malt in the back. Color is a slightly hazy amber gold with mellow carbonation and a thin head. Taste is sweet, hoppy then bitter. Starting with a medium body it goes down smooth with a rich feel. Finish comes in malty sweet with a little caramel, then a big bold hop flavor with some citrus that has a hint of orange. After taste is a lingering citrus with a mild bitterness. This is a great Double IPA, its extremely well balanced and very drinkable, yet big, rich and bold.
