Granite City Broad Axe Stout

A bit more mild than your average stout. Not as hoppy as I would expect, either. But this one is very smooth, and what it lacks in flavor, it makes up for in refreshment.

Draft in MO. Pours a black body with a coffee head. Licorice with faint chocolate malt notes. Roast and coffee tones with a thin body and light char. Okay.

Tap. Very dark, black pour. Tan head, very tall and creamy. Light aroma of roast. Flavor has a lot of oats and roast. Bitter finish of fuggles and char. Burnt grains. Very dry. A very good stout. Hints of fruit under all of the burnt flavors.

Thick creamy light brown head, dark brown in color, faint coffee aroma with a slight coffee/chocolate flavor. Thin, watery mouthfeel and not much of a finish. Not bad for someone getting into stouts but doesn’t stand up to the better ones.

A black beer with a creamy tan head that lasts as long as you want it to. Coffee, toffee, and thin roasy malt nose. Flavor is bitter and dry and dominated by light cofee and chocolate taste. Texture is smooth and creamy. There is not much of an aftertaste for a beer of this stature, but what is there reminds me of toasty, chocolate malt.

I hate this place, but when one came to town, I had to try all the beers. They’re all average to bad. This one tastes like water mixed with a teaspoon of old coffee grinds.

Nice dark color. Nutty and smooth with chocolate nose and a creamy long lasting head with a good mouth-feel.

Out of the sampler I had, this was one of the better beers. Pours black with a thick tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate. Flavor is the same with a little bit of a nutty flavor as well. Not bad, but nothing amazing.
