| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Jul 20, 2008 Grabbed a growler from Granite City in Rockford, IL(very expensive $15 plus $8 to fill) and would not recommend their growlers since they seem to lack the ability to keep the beer carbonated well. Poured from the growler black. Aroma is toasted malts and strong of coffee. Flavor is a good bitterness with great coffee flavor and has a faint caramel end note. Palate is a bit weak and lacks any depth in density of the brew. esjaygee (1578), Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA
| 2.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 7/20 | May 30, 2008 On tap at Rockford Granite City. The waitress, upon bringing me the sampler called this a watered down version of Guinness. That pretty much hits the nail on the head. It kind of looks like a Guinness, it’s brown with a tan head. The aroma has the mildest of coffee aromas, is Granite City scared to put any character into their beers? It’s a stout, not like the general public is going to order this anyway! The body is thin, watery, flavorless with a mild bitter finish, blah. Rant aside, Granite City in Rockford had good food and one of the friendliest wait staffs I’ve had in forever. It’s a shame their beer stinks. Oxymoron (104), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Apr 11, 2008 Broadaxe Stout is listed as an Dry Stout. It has an impressive appearance with a midnight black color with a decent tan head and good lacing. When tipped the dark color remained as the beer displaces. So, good color. The smell was limited but you really have to look for it. Really the only thing I pick up is the roasted malt. The taste is stronger in chocolate flavor but limited roasted qualities are noticed as well. Broadaxe Stout was a little watered down for a dry stout. The malt backing was missing as well. Also the beer has slightly hoppy flavor that was somewhat sweet like a coco. The body was light and the carbonation was relatively high for the style. Overall this could be a good beer but definitely needs more of strong malt billed to be really good. hotstuff (3176), Indiana, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Mar 19, 2008 Draft at Fort Wayne, IN location. Very small tan head that full lasted, excellent lacing, opaque, no visible carbonation, and a dark brown hue. Nose was roasty, chocolate, coffee, and malt.Ditto for the flavor, but finished thin. Mouthfeel was smooth and thin. Light in body. Quaffable but too thin give the style. OD40oz (602), Box Elder, South Dakota, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 15, 2008 NIIIIIICE Brew. Dark with a tan foamy head. Roasty chocolatey coffee taste. I would definitely drink this again. I wish Rapid City had a Granite City so I wouldn’t have to be in Sioux Falls to go there. jsquire (2121), St. Marys, Ohio, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 8, 2008 On tap at the Ft. Wayne Indiana pub. Dark beer with a thin lasting khaki foam on top. Subtle chocolate and coffee nose. Very smooth beer with lots of roasted grains, bitter chocolate and sweetened coffee flavors. I got an almost smoked bacon taste. Not bad for trucked in wort.
