Granite City Broad Axe Stout

At Wichita, KS location, this beer had very little body, and absolutely no lacing. It seemed to have deep chocolate and roasted coffee flavor, but without that proper full texture, this beer falls flat as do the most of Granite City’s selection.

Draught sample at the St Louis Park MN location, RBSG Minneapolis weekend, June 23 2007. Served on nitro. Not quite opaque, the bit of off-white foam lasts through the tasting....faint berries, chocolate and medium-roast coffee in the mild but pleasant aroma...weak cocoa and flat cherry-coke are the results in the body, somewhat watery and certainly not malty enough....smoooth, dull nitro-killed mouthfeel, not quite as poor as most of the other offerings.....probably the best beer of this sampling.

A Granite City opened up in Mad-town about a year ago. I stopped in and the bartender recommended this Broad Axe Stout because it was a step up from Guiness. I should have known that the bartender was full of sh*t!! You would think that it would have some type of taste considering how dark it is... but you would be wrong. You almost would think you were drinking a chocolate/coffee hybrid by the smell of it... but you would be wrong. You also would think that I made out with the bartender’s girlfriend since he recommend this crap... you might be right. ;)

Light, somewhat dry, but mostly papery and flavorless. Very slight roast flavor but no discernible chocolate. Bland. On nitro.

A disappointing stout. Good color but no body to go along with the notes of chocolate malt and hops.

Pours black with a grey head with nice lacing. Smells of chocolate and coffee. It has a light, sweet, chocolate, roasted coffee flavor. It is creamy and smooth.

This reminded me of a modern porter mixed with a dry stout rather than a "traditional dry Irish Stout". However, it was very good for what I was expecting based on the reviews here. As black and opaque as a good stout should be, it featured a thick mocha head of foam that lasted throughout the pint. Aroma was roasted malts and a bittersweet cocoa. Good bitterness in the flavor department, quite creamy-tasting. Maybe a tad too watery for its style.
