Commercial Description:
Considered by many master-brewers to be the most complex, rich style of brewing in the world, this Belgian “Dubbel” uses pure Belgian candi sugar, Belgian malts and a rare Belgian strain of brewer’s yeast to produce “esters”—flavors that range from clove to banana.

(Draught) Pours an amber-brown body with a medium beige head. Aroma of raisins, toasted grain, toffee, caramel, and bread. Flavor of roasted malt, candi sugar, raisins, banana, caramel, light cocoa, and clove.

Bottled GABF sample. Amber colored brew with a full head of solid density. Nose is fairly nice, dominated by notes of bubble gum, dark fruits and caramel. Flavor is also fairly enjoyable and has decent complexity. Flavors of light red fruits while the yeast gives the illusion of spices (mainly cinnamon.) This is a pretty nice interpretation of the Belgian dubbel style.

TAP NY 2008. Amber color not quite clear. Belgian sweet aroma with some spices. A bit sticky sweet but has some fruit besides the dark malts. Not too heavy and not too much alcohol.

Poured a lightly hazy red amber color, with a small, light tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of light spices, some banana, caramel malts, dark fruits, some roast, and a bit of cocoa. Taste of light banana, cherry, caramel, cocoa powder, spices (clove), and light alcohol.

Tap at the Belgian Room. Crystal clear with a thin tan head. Rich brown colour with a bit of orangey highlights. Aroma is mildly toffeeish with light licorice, cherry and toasted malts. A soft orange peel and light spiciness. The yeasty spice is very subtle and serves to accent the wheat and the softly toasted caramelly malts. A kiss of molasses and rummy/plummy sweetness. It’s a very drinkable and well-attenuated version of this style which is nice to see from an American brewer. Lightly sweet, moderately spicy with a soft banana fruitiness on the back. A kiss of mint hoppiness as well. Very nice.

Draft on The Belgian Room. Light brown color with a bit of grape and tons of banana and caramel. Funny, but I get a bit of soda ash in this. Overall, a weird tasting beer.
