phishpond417 (1861), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Nov 21, 2008 This brew pours a dark brownish black colour with a two finger sized tan head. Lace that is left behind is sticky. Aroma is soft, faint with noticeable nutty character. But kind of weak. Taste is slightly metallicy with plum and apple flavors. Overall it’s a pretty average brew. Skyview (4007), Papoose Jct., Minnesota, USA Nov 2, 2008 Sampled cask drawn at the downtown Madison, Wisconsin brewpub. Pours clear dark cola brown brew with a creamy off-white head that has some nice retention and spotty lacing. Aroma of toasted dark malt, some citrus and pine hops, a touch of chocolate and some roasted nuts. Taste us medium bodied, no carbonation with flavors of toasted dark malt, a little grapefruit and spruce, and a touch of dark chocolate. Finish as a silky texture with a mild grapefruit and bitterness. holdenn (1432), Chicago, Illinois, USA Oct 16, 2008 On tap at the brewpub downtown. Pours a dark brown with a soapy off white head. Roasty chocolate nose with a touch of coffee. Those same notes in the flavor of roasty coffee and chocolate with a touch of fruit and bitter hops in the finish. Slightly watery, but an enjoyable beer. GeneralGao (3051), Iowa City, Iowa, USA Oct 4, 2008 Cask at Great Dane (downtown). Poured a clear dark brown color with orange highlights. The head was light brown. Smelled of chocolate, citrusy hops, and roasted nuts. Light to medium bodied and slightly sweet with low carbonation and a smooth mouth feel that you’d expect from a cask conditioned beer. Roasty, subdued chocolate flavor with a light, but distinct grassy hop note. There was also a detracting adhesive tape flavor. So so. presario (2953), Calgary, Alberta, Canada May 29, 2007 Chicago Trip. Sunday 20:50+. Sample tray. Black with a thick creamy head. Bitter coffee aroma. Nice lite coffee flavoured porter. troyc (1173), Lubbock, Texas, USA May 17, 2007 (Tap) Pours a dark brown color with tan head. Aroma of caramel and light hops. Taste includes dark chocolate, cream, and a touch of alcoholic warming. Excellent lacing. Creamy mouthfeel, and a good porter. drpimento (785), La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA May 7, 2007 My ever lovin’ lord, thank you for bestowin this heah beah upon me. It’s good. Like reeeeeal good. a little chewiness. roasty malty and just plain fricking good. nuff said. oops except for had it at the Bodega Brew PUb downtown La Crosse, Wis USA where it’s on tap FRESH!!!! Silphium (2114), Haslett, Michigan, USA May 1, 2007 On tap at the downtown location. Deep opaque brown-black body, thin cream head. Dry, bitter aroma, with roasted malts and a thin acidity. Body dominated by bitter, charred malts, unsweetened chocolate, and piney hops. Thin and weak. I’m not sure how this batch differs from the earlier batches reviewed here, but I found this porter to be subpar.
