Robust, dark, espresso-laden flavors; sharp, strong earthy finish. Best thing I had on this most recent visit to the Dane. Skyview (4076), Papoose Jct., Minnesota, USA

Pours clear dark cola brown brew with a creamy off-white head that has some nice retention and spotty lacing. Aroma of toasted dark malt, some citrus and pine hops, a touch of chocolate and some roasted nuts. Taste us medium bodied, no carbonation with flavors of toasted dark malt, a little grapefruit and spruce, and a touch of dark chocolate. Finish as a silky texture with a mild grapefruit and bitterness. Ughsmash (4072), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 19, 2005 On tap at the Madison brewpub. Poured an exceptionally-dark iced tea brown with a creamy beige head. Intricate lacing followed the brew down. As promised, lots of grapefruit and pine from the Cascade hoppage up front in both the nose and flavor. Great burnt chocolate malts backed up the hops. Citrus and pine, baker’s chocolate, light coffee, and lemon zest were exceptionally well-blended together in the flavor. Medium-bodied. Palate was smooth with well-placed oily and bitter hop feel. Wonderful hoppy porter! badgerben (3605), Blaine, Minnesota, USA

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Oct 4, 2008 Cask at Great Dane (downtown). Poured a clear dark brown color with orange highlights. The head was light brown. Smelled of chocolate, citrusy hops, and roasted nuts. Light to medium bodied and slightly sweet with low carbonation and a smooth mouth feel that you’d expect from a cask conditioned beer. Roasty, subdued chocolate flavor with a light, but distinct grassy hop note. There was also a detracting adhesive tape flavor. So so. presario (3001), Calgary, Alberta, Canada

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 11, 2005 Sampled on tap tonight. The beer pours to a dark black body with a thick and dense khaki head that disapates to a thin film. Awesome lacing. The aroma is porterish with light hops. A touch weak given that Madison’s smoke free and I can’t hardly smell it. The flavor is smooth, a light almond chocolate with some grapefruit hops hiding under the maltiness. The palate is slick and medium bodied. Very easy drinking. Very delicate flavor.
