Commercial Description:
Barrel Aged Old Ruffian Barley Wine was aged for 20 months in Stranahan’s barrels. As it does for Yeti, the aging process mellows Old Ruffian’s edge while adding gentle notes of oak, whiskey and vanilla to the 12.7% ABV and 85 IBUs beer. (The original Old Ruffian won a Gold medal at the 2006 Great American Beer Festival and a Silver medal at the 2007 GABF.)

“Our intent,” says Great Divide founder Brian Dunn, “was to age each beer in the barrels for 9 months. But we got busy with other projects, primarily the addition of a new bottling line, and the beers ended up aging for more than a year and half.” While the labels on the bottles state that the beers were aged 9 months in barrels, both beers were in fact aged 20 months in barrels.

Release limited to 470 bottles.

From the Bottle at the Brewery Room of the Great Divide Brewing Company, Denver 10/10/2008 Whisky aroma. Mid brown coloured smooth on the palate and very strong in alcohol with a bitter and slightly dry warming finish.

What a great beer. The pour is a clear dark brown with a bit of a tan head. The nose is wonderful chewy malts and big hops with a nice compliment from the bourbon barrel. All of the great Ruffian flavors are there and the booze and oak are just along for the ride. Full and rich with a dry alcoholic finish. I love this.

(Sample Date: 6/6/2009 Source:Other) RB Richmond Gathering. Bottle 193/461 obtained at the brewery. Aroma of dark fruits and some wood, caramelized sugar, and hint of alcohol. Clear dark amber brown with small white head. Deep dark fruits, oak dark sugars, and hints of creosote in the flavor. Finish is dry and moderately bitter with whiskey and wood coming through. Fantastic.

Thick, viscous brew both in appearance and mouth feel. Hearty aroma of dark, fermented fruits, bran cereal, and bitter-sweet baked goods. The scent permeates the air around the glass and invites you in for a great experience. Smooth whiskey effect ties the malty flavors with the floral hints. Nutty with plenty of roasted malts and green faded hops. Complex and well aged, it awakens all of the senses.

750 ml bottle - oh yea, thanks brandon!! been wanting to drink this for a while and always seemed to get put off; dark orange with slight tan head; lovely rich nose of zesty sugar, spice, fruit, caramel, vanilla; full bodied, creamy texture and a delight to drink; some whiskey is there, but in a complimentary fashion; just a bunch of rich, barley wine goodness
