Commercial Description:
Barrel Aged Old Ruffian Barley Wine was aged for 20 months in Stranahan’s barrels. As it does for Yeti, the aging process mellows Old Ruffian’s edge while adding gentle notes of oak, whiskey and vanilla to the 12.7% ABV and 85 IBUs beer. (The original Old Ruffian won a Gold medal at the 2006 Great American Beer Festival and a Silver medal at the 2007 GABF.)

“Our intent,” says Great Divide founder Brian Dunn, “was to age each beer in the barrels for 9 months. But we got busy with other projects, primarily the addition of a new bottling line, and the beers ended up aging for more than a year and half.” While the labels on the bottles state that the beers were aged 9 months in barrels, both beers were in fact aged 20 months in barrels.

Release limited to 470 bottles.

Bottle 265/461:   Deep amber, brownish hues, small to moderate spritzy off-white head, spotty lacing.   Strong caramel notes on the nose.   Otherwise a good dose of hops.   Seems fairly sweet, loads of caramel.   On the tongue it remains fairly hot.   This could stand to be put down for a while longer.   I just wish I had a few more to age for a few years.   Big barrel flavor comes through on this one. &nbap Certainly much like Bourbon or Whiskey.   Fairly viscous and malty.   A little bright, certainly a little hot.   Very warming.   The sweetness is well balanced.   Not cloying at all.   Only thing I can say about this beer is that it is certainly nice to drink now, I think it will only improve with a year or two.   Great stuff!

Bottle… October ‘09 O-Town Throwdown! This beer rocks!… Murky amber ale with a small, fragile, off-white head. The aroma offers a wealth of caramel, vanilla, bourbon and pouch tobacco. Medium to full-bodied and creamy with lively carbonation. Vanilla, bourbon, toffee and caramel are the standout flavors. Mild acidity. Warm, but not hot - the bourbon component is not overbearing. Lengthy, caramely, warming finish. World class bottle of beer courtesy of JW77!

Pours a brownish dark maroon color, with a medium light beige head. Smells of rich bourbon, vanilla cream, caramel, dark fruits, and yeast. Really dug that nose. Awesome. The flavor was of Rich caramel cream and bourbon, with dark fruits, and malts balancing it out, so it wasnt overly hot or a bourbon bomb. Went down smooth as silk, and was extremely flavorful. Great barrel aging on this brew, as it seemed made just right for it. Bravo.

Tasting at TAR’s. Pours dark brown with an off-white head. Smells of oak and vanilla. Very sweet with aromas of caramel and almond. Also hints of grains and nuts. Heavy aromas of alcohol. Aromas of cask wood and vanilla and hints of earth. Some residual sweetness towards the end with aromas of brown sugar. Medium to full bodied. Medium carbonation. Sweet and bitter finish with a hint of chalk.
