Commercial Description:
Barrel Aged Yeti Imperial Stout has been aged for 20 months in used barrels from Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey, Colorado’s only whiskey maker. The rich and robustly roasted beer of 12.2% ABV and 75 International Bittering Units (IBUs) picks up flavors of oak, vanilla and whiskey through the extended aging process. These flavors add greater complexity to the already rich beer, while tempering its assertive nature.

“Our intent,” says Great Divide founder Brian Dunn, “was to age each beer in the barrels for 9 months. But we got busy with other projects, primarily the addition of a new bottling line, and the beers ended up aging for more than a year and half.” While the labels on the bottles state that the beers were aged 9 months in barrels, both beers were in fact aged 20 months in barrels.

Release limited to 470 bottles.

Bottle. Brought back from Denver after GABF 2008. Shared with jarspag, sauceyhops, Katie and Jon. Black, oily appearance with no carbonation. Striking similarity to soy sauce. Aroma is packed with oak wood and smoky bourbon whiskey. Very pleasing nose. The flavor follows up a bit less impressive. Mostly strong whiskey with a slight metallic aftertaste. Maybe this has oxidized from sitting in the barrel too long. Palate feels watered down. Nice oak flavors hang on the aftertaste. Kind of thin bodied.

Bottle. Poured dark black with no head. Very hoppy sweet nose. First flavor was of licorice, but has a nice smokey flavor with hints of vanilla. A bit of the abv is noticeable, but not overpowering.Big finish that is sweet, than quite bitter. Nice beer.

Color is solid black with light carbonation and a thin tan head. Aroma is deep and rich with sweet roasted scents, a hint of oak and some whiskey. Taste is rich and sweet. Starting with a full body it goes down with a rich smooth, almost silky feel. Finish is bold with sweetness of dried fruit some vanilla and oak, then just a faint touch of hops with a very mellow bitterness. After taste is a little more bitterness then on the tail end is a dry oak whiskey like alcohol feel. This is a very big bold brew and defiantly a sipper.

I love the Oak Aged Yeti, so this one was enjoyable as well. I would love to see how this one ages, as its just way too hot right now. Too much whiskey in both the armoa and flavor. Maintains Yetis oily texture, which was nice, but lost some of the thickness, which was not. Notes of chocolate, vanilla, and wood throughout. This one should age nicely, but for the ridiculous price, Id much rather just get the Oak Yeti.

750ml bottle, 286/470, with a huge thanks to the man BlackForestCO. Pours a seemingly thicker dark brown/black with a creamy one finger dark tan head, moderate retention and lacing. Aroma is vanilla, whiskey, although not overpowering or too forward, oak, molasses, and light milk chocolate. Flavor is more whiskey forward, but still works well, with vanilla, oak and more milk chocolate. Being a fan of BA beers, I found this to be quite nice. Thanks again Jake, you rock.

100th Imperial Stout rating. Pours pitch black with a light brown head. Looks kind of watery though. There is a lot of alcohol aroma in the nose. The flavor sooooo hot. There is some chocolate and bourbon. Seems thin too.

Much thanks to hopdog for sharing this hard to come by bottle. Pours a deep black with a creamy/bubbly medium deep tan lacing head. Aroma of intense dark chocolate, whiskey, vanilla, oak, nuts, toffee, tobacco and some alcohol burn. Flavor of vanilla, oak, caramel, smooth whiskey notes, nuts, chocolate and light roasty notes.

[31/470] Poured an opaque black color with a small, tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malts, smoke, chocolate, vanilla, and sharp bourbon. Taste of bitter roast, dark chocolate, vanilla, raisins, nuts, and bourbony alcohol. Thanks for sharing Steve!
