Commercial Description:
Barrel Aged Yeti Imperial Stout has been aged for 20 months in used barrels from Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey, Colorado’s only whiskey maker. The rich and robustly roasted beer of 12.2% ABV and 75 International Bittering Units (IBUs) picks up flavors of oak, vanilla and whiskey through the extended aging process. These flavors add greater complexity to the already rich beer, while tempering its assertive nature.

“Our intent,” says Great Divide founder Brian Dunn, “was to age each beer in the barrels for 9 months. But we got busy with other projects, primarily the addition of a new bottling line, and the beers ended up aging for more than a year and half.” While the labels on the bottles state that the beers were aged 9 months in barrels, both beers were in fact aged 20 months in barrels.

Release limited to 470 bottles.

Thanks to BlackForestCO for the bottle. Pours black with a big brown head. Aroma of wood and booze with some chocolate coffee. Flavor is burnt malt and alcohol. Too much carbonation and booze. Huge disappointment.

Big thanks to Gillard for bringing another BA GD beer. Thanks Ryan. Pours deep black darkness with 60 second mocha head. The aroma is full of vanilla, fresh cut oak, mild molasses, caramel and boozy whiskey. The taste begins feeling thick and rich bringing up smooth notes of chocolate, molasses and caramel. Big wood oak notes and whiskey booze surface by midway and squeeze out the malt flavors. As the finish approaches booze alcohol chemicals rise up and move the rich chocolate and molasses to the side completely. Could use a bit less booziness. The chocolate, mild coffee, burnt malts and molasses somehow manage to resurface at the finish and persist into the after taste.

Bottle thanks to Mentor. Pours black with a nice brown head. Nose was disappointing at first, maybe too cold. It did get better over time. Nose was of oak, but not a lot of whiskey and some alcohol. Taste was chocolate, licorice and roasted malt. Mouthfeel was medium, but not as thick as most impy stouts. This was good, but not great. Oak Aged Yeti and regular Yeti are both better. Disappointed.

Bottle courtesy of Gillard. Pours a dark black murky color with thin tan yellow head. Aroma is roasted, malty and sweet with notes of vanilla, oak, whiskey, rye, ripe dark fruits, dark chocolate. Flavor is also roasted, malty and sweet with notes of ripe dark fruit, whiskey, vanilla, wood, dark chocolate. Generally full body with a pleasing roasted malty finish. Bourbon notes are more subtle in this beer than some barrel-aged beers, something I enjoyed.

Bottle from MatlOMeal shared at the Houston Impy Stout II Tasting. Thanks! Pours a beautiful slightly off-black with a nice dark tan head. Aroma is very subtle- almost TOO subtle- pancake syrup, sweet notes of chocolate-infused alcohol, and a touch of caramel. Flavor is a rush of hopped-up, syrup-soaked, sweet-breaded bourbonized stout. Thinner-than-expected mouthfeel. Not bad, but I’ve had this beer before; I need something to set it apart.

Bottle #353, courtesy Gilliard. Pours pitch black with very creamy dark brown head and lacing. Huge nose of oak and whiskey, followed by big roast, caramel, vanilla and dark fruit. Very flavorful: creamy chocolate and some roasted coffee and caramel. Nutty notes, and a slight alcohol burn. Full-bodied, smooth and very creamy. The alcohol is virtually nowhere to be found.

Gillard is the man, thanks for thinking of us! Pours a dark red-brown with a brown head. Nose is rye, whiskey, wood, phenol, chocolate, and vanilla. I get a lot of specifically whiskey character from this one, as opposed to other beers that are aged solely in "barrels." Flavor is chocolate, phenol, whiskey, oak, earth, and some dark chocolate. This was a rare treat with a lot of dark complexity. Awesome beer.

Bottle thanks to the Gambeeeeez of doooom. The long barrel aging didn’t really do this guy well. Reminded me of BA Speedway in how it took on an annoying sweetness. Good and enjoyable, but not an epic beer. I’ll take both yeti and oaked yeti over this...
