Great Divide Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti

After having tried the other versions of Yeti I was looking forward to this eagerly. A bit of disappointment later I was reminded of a hopped up Southern Tier’s chocolate bomb. It is still enjoyable and very interesting; I just prefer the other strains of Yeti more.

Aroma / Appearance - The deep black slimy body crawled down the glass leaving a teak colored head. Sticky streams of lacing clung to the sides like strands of ice. Roasted chocolate marshmellows, floral hops, freshly split oak, and chilled black coffee were not quite what I was expecting but were close enough.

Flavor / Palate - The taste of a Mars Bar hopped up a few levels made this one stand out from the start. Iced mocha, hickory shavings, and a strong chocolate truffle finish definitely means this is not for the faint of heart. I’d almost buy this again if it were not $11.99 and competing with other alternatives like Speedway Stout and Expedition.

Bottled.. Pours black with a creamy light brown head.. Light chocolate aroma that was slightly woody and perfumey.. Flavor is chocolate, roasty and you can really pick up the wood. Medium carbonation and full body.

650 ml bottle from ditmier. Thanks man. Popped open on the occasion that I just got a promotion. Pours an opaque black color with a big tan head that has great retention. The nose is big and bold with spicy oak, coffee and dark pitted fruits. The flavor is similar to the nose, lots of spicy oak up front, with coffee, chocolate, biter hops and black licorice. The palate is smooth and creamy. The finish is long and dry with biter dark chocolate. Overall: Its a good thing that I like Oak, because this is the oakiest beer that I can recall. A great concoction

Bomber thanks to MrBunn via a lovely little trade. Pours deep, dark black with tannish-red head that is thick and pourous at once. Fades slowly with nice lacing. Scents of cocoa and anise prevail on the first sniff, Closer inspection reveals much of the same. Flavor is nice, initially a bit tame, but then turns to bitter chocolate, licorice, and, yes, just a touch of cayenne, especially in the after palate. ABV is nigh imperceptible. A very solid impy, though I agree fully with the previous rater that the watery body, and somewhat light mouthfeel , as well as the understated aroma, keep this short of full-on awesomeness. Okay, re-rating, kind of. The cayenne in this really jumps as it warms, bringing it up a notch in both flavor and overall for me. Delicious, different, and intriguing... just like me ;)

22 oz bottle, bottled on 7/16/09. Pours a dark black-brown with a creamy dark brown head that diminishes to a thin film that laces the glass.

The aroma is sweet lactic chocolate, with some cayenne and black licorice and roast.

The flavor is sweet lactic chocolate with a lot of roast, some licorice and a tarry cayenne pepper bitter finish. The cayenne pepper adds a note of red hots that is interesting and gives a little burn in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and a little watery.

Overall, an excellent beer. I like what the chocolate and cayenne adds to an already fine stout. I like this a lot better than the oak aged yeti. A little better in the nose and mouthfeel and this could be a perfect beer.

Maybe it was just me but too much heat from the ABV, maybe it was the combination of flavors but I love the espresso, the solo oak aged is a little hot but manageble, regular yeti very drinkable, but this one not so much. I can appreciate the complexity within the beer, but again the hotness from the alcohol is too much. I’d compair it to a fresh Goose Island’s burbon county stoudt, very upfront with the alcohol but with a few years an awesome beer. Will cellar for a few and check back.

Deep black motor oil colored pour with a dark brown head. Roasted malt, chocolate/cocoa, oak aromas. Taste is of roasted malt, chocolate, vanilla with a little heat coming out at the end. It is noticeable, but not overbearing. Great lacing up and down the whole glass. All the flavors come together to create a wonderful beer. This one bomber is all I could drink in one sitting, but I would welcome it back again.

sample from bottle at the brewpub - Pours black with a tan head. The aroma is roast malt and a big chocolate blast. Flavor is the same along with plenty of dark chocolate and hops bitterness. It’s full bodied and very tasty. Strangely I didn’t really notice the peppers. I’d thought cayenne would have jumped out at me.
