Aroma of caramel and peat, slight smokiness. Flavor much the same, with the earthiness really coming to the fore. Pleasant example of the style and great label on the bottle. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 8, 2009 Earthy coffee and peat aroma, clean and inviting. Dark ruby brown, small tan head. Smooth, yet a lot of earth character. Intense, though gentle smoke. It’s a lot of beer, but not all at once. I love that smoke, it will keep me coming back. daknole (2987), Plantation, Florida, USA

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Apr 5, 2009 12oz bottle served in a shaker pint. Poured a clear dark reddish brown with about a finger of tan head. Malty aroma with some caramel and cocoa. Also some hop aroma comes through as it warms. Nice rich body and mouthfeel. More malt in the flavor. More cocoa and a good amount of smokiness. The smoke lingers in the finish along with some hops. Much more hop bitterness than a true Scottish version. Good American take on the style. beastiefan2k (1603), Lawrence (formely NYC), Kansas, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Apr 4, 2009 Updated: Apr 5, 2009Eghh, right away I am wondering what the hell did GD do, its way too hoppy for the beer. Aroma is bitter, leafy hops, which is not something I want from a Scotch Ale and its not it works well, its just a waste at an attempt at a Scotch Ale. Eh, the flavor goes the same route. There is a nice lightly chocolate-y, soil and earthy like maltiness hidden beneath all that. 12oz bottle, bottled March 3, 2008, Gordon’s thistle glass.
