The aroma is rich fruity malts and a slight aroma I have described as musty. The flavor is simple and easygoing; loads of fruity malts, some caramel, dry and musty in the finish. A nice beer. scraff (1942), Baltimore, Maryland, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 22, 2009 12oz - Perfect Pour. Dense brown, thick tan creamy head. Soft smoke and caramel nose with undertones of chocolate and cherry molasses. Toffee smoke flavors balance on a baker’s chocolate end note. A faint touch of hops rounds this out well. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, drying peaty finish. Nicely done and worth picking up here and there.... mitch1261 (12), Louisville, Kentucky, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 20, 2009 This beer pours a dark ruby color with a small tan head. The aroma was not very distinquishing but there are hints of chocolate. The flavor had a caramel sweetness with a solid malt taste. Overall it is a good beer. ditmier (1091), Boise, Idaho, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 20, 2009 2009 Bottle - Thanks SpringsLicker! - Pours a dk brown with a quickly dissipating tan head...aroma is not terribly appealing, I get burnt wet peat moss, dark chocolate malt...flavour is a whole differnet animal, malty, doughy, smokey and swampily tasty...finishes with a subtle choco creaminess, alcohol burn is nil, very well intergrated...fun treat!... after4ever (2770), Brier, Washington, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Mar 20, 2009 12-oz., cracked at Uber. Thanks, Nugget! Pours a deep grainy mahogany-ish dark brown. Nice thick creamy tan head. Looks like a classic wee heavy. Very subdued brown bread, caramel, and super-faint cocoa powder notes on the nose. I mean, the whole nose is vacant until it’s warmed up for five or ten minutes, and it didn’t even start out that cold. I can understand wanting to make a scotch with a more restrained nose than a lot of the big names in the style, but this is probably too far the other way. Nice creamy body, plenty of woft and woolly carb. Solid 3-seasons cold day body on the beer. Flavors are more of the same profile from the aromatics, equally restrained: brown bread, molasses, caramel, tiny hints of cocoa. The scots are not known for their timidity, and scotch ales are not known for their timidity. This one needs a good breeze to get its kilt in the air and get it feisty. Not sure I’d trade all the calories and liver points to drink this very often, even though it’s perfectly fine and unflawed. KAggie97 (2458), Ugly, Hot, and Humid Spring, Texas, USA

Pours a deep mahogany with reddish highlights and a nice off-white head. Aroma is sewage earth tempered by a sweetness that most likely comes from a smoky chocolate source. Flavor is licorice peat with hints of earth and a bitter smoky chocolate aftertaste. Nice mouthfeel. Not bad, but not spectacular. ElDuderino (141), Roslindale, Massachusetts, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Mar 19, 2009 Bottle, pours a chocolate brown body with dark red hues at the corners. Nice tall tight tan head that left very little lacing on the glass. Notes of licorice, peat and toffee dominate with a roasty earthy aftertaste. The body felt heavy on the tongue with little alcohol presence until it warmed up significantly. Pallate was smoother cold and had a grassy sour note emerge as it warmed. bvc (287), Kenmore, Washington, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Mar 19, 2009 12oz bottle at Uber. Pours a very dark deep brown, almost black. Head is off white and thin. Nose is slightly sweet and vegetal with earthy hints of moist dirt/soil. Doesn’t really jump out at me. Body is a bit on the thin side and carbonation is mellow. This one just doesn’t taste all that great to me. Not enough sweet chewy maltiness or smokey peaty notes. Has a bit of a metallic/sour ’twang’ to it. Very middle of the road.
