Commercial Description:
Named for a medieval Scottish sword, Claymore Scotch ale is a tribute to the legendary "Wee Heavy" beers of Scotland. A malty, deep-ruby-hued ale, it features a generous amount of caramel sweetness, a reserved hop profile and a subtle warming character, at 7.7% alcohol by volume. Claymore will be available in six-packs and on draft through mid-April.

Bottle Ours a deep brown with a tan head. The head is creamy and lasting. The head is producing nice lacing. Aroma is of caramel, malts, and nuts. Has a light carbonation. The flavor is on the lines of a light stout. Has good blending. Hints of a slight metalic taste. Has a medium body. A solid finish with a good aftertaste. This is a pretty good beer.

12 oz. bottle from Plaza Liquors - Pours a clear brown color with a one and a 1/4 finger thick light tan head. Nice lacing. Aroma is dark malt and dark esters and stewed veggies. Flavor is chocolate, caramel, and biscuit malt and esters. Medium body. I was expecting some smoked peat, but could detect any. Overall, a nice beer.

6 pack at Total Beverage in Westminster. Very deep dark brown, small foamy head. Dry dark malt, some chocolate, maybe some alcohol in aroma. Taste: smooth dark malt, sweet, roasty almost, but opened up in finish with some hops, more sweetness and alcohol. Interesting how it changes from first sip to finish. Terrific Scotch ale, add some smoke and it may be perfect.

The pour yields a really deep and dark mahogany brown body with glints of chestnut colored translucency at the outer reaches. A small, frothy, beige head settles in to a thin film with a pronounced, bubbly edge, while scattered micro-spots dot the glass. The nose shows pronounced dry cocoa malts and deeply roasted grains, with a decent scorched caramel and dark toffee component. Mild, earthen hops contribute hints of bitterness to the underlying sweet and toasty malts. Flavors show the same, with cocoa and scorched caramel leading the way. Roasted grain and traces of dark fruit come through, with lightly peppery hops kicking in on the finish. The flavor profile begs for some smoked peat, but it never really materializes, settling more on the earthy side of things. Medium bodied, the palate starts out creamy but quickly intensifies to a lively, fizzy finish. Good brew overall.
