Commercial Description:
Named for a medieval Scottish sword, Claymore Scotch ale is a tribute to the legendary "Wee Heavy" beers of Scotland. A malty, deep-ruby-hued ale, it features a generous amount of caramel sweetness, a reserved hop profile and a subtle warming character, at 7.7% alcohol by volume. Claymore will be available in six-packs and on draft through mid-April.

Pours with a very deep, dark garnet color and a fairly small, beige, pillowy head which is mostly diminishing and leaves minimal lace rings. Nose is bland with light smoky-peaty earthiness, light caramel and chocolate, and hints at roast. Flavor is better with more sweet caramel and rich chocolate, peat is evident with an earthy character, roast is still faint, some light hazelnut notes, and hints at brown sugar, molasses, and cocoa. Typical malt richness with some mild complexity, light bitterness, and subtle peat. Palate is good with medium to full body, velvety texture, borderline oily, and a nearly lively carbonation. The earthy peat and faint roast dry the finish out just a touch and give a moderately light bitterness with lingering caramel and hazelnut. From the start, this one did not impress me, but the subtle complexities in the flavor and the perfect warming but drinkable nature of the beer made for a nice brew. While not one of my favorite, nor traditional, Scotches, it was enjoyable. Certainly not GD’s best beer but still a decent beer from them. Great minds really do drink alike!

12oz bottle 4/26/09 (Courtesy of RSRIZZO)-Pours black with a small hed that dissipates into nothing. Aroma of coffee, caramel, sweetness, and bacon. Taste is of the same with a bit of alcohol on the back end. This medium bodied brew is not bad and quite tasty.

Bottle. Almost black. Thin head. Light charcoal scent. Very dark malt and earthy peat flavour. Intriguing touch of sweetness mixed with the heavy peaty malt.

On tap. Roasty, sweet, caramel, smokey aroma. Dark brown with no head. Very smooth sweet malt flavor. No alcohol taste at all, dangerously drinkable. Medium bodied, with low carbonation and a silky smooth mouth feel. This is a great strong Scottish Ale. Great Divide continues to amaze me with the quality of their beer and their low retail prices.

Dark brown color with a medium head. Light smoke aroma and a bit buttery. Rich and slick malt flavor. Quite thick. Light smoke and butter. Almost an ash flavor as well.

Pours near black, or at least extremely dark ruby. Contrasting off white head is classy. Nose is delightful with peatsmoke, a suggestion of bacon, and smoked malts. Palate offers a masculine roasty malt flavor with some of the peat from the nose mixing in, and a robust toffee/caramel middle that leads to a toffee-like finish. Medium bodied and dangerously drinkable for the alcohol. Exceptional beer.

Bottle. Pours a medium brown with two fingers of sudsy tan head. Aromas are leathery with a little bit of wet rotting wood and molasses. Flavor is obnoxiously sweet... brown, caramelized sugar with leather, cardboard and light peat. Kinda expected more from this...
