Commercial Description:
Think of it as a hefeweizen’s older brother. A hearty mix of wheat and dark German barley malts gives it a medium body and muddy brown hue, while our proprietary yeast strain provides the signature notes of banana and clove. If you like wheat beers, come to the Dunkel side. You won’t be disappointed. Just don’t put any lemon in it. 6.4% ABV.

Bomber into a tall wheat glass. Pours brown with plenty of red in it with a loose and bubbly khaki head that goes away quick like soda pop. The aroma is somewhat sweet and fruity, and I can’t get over the fact that it reminds me of cooked corn casserole. The flavor is wheat, caramel, and nuts, but with an underlying hint of corn and salmon... or something like that which is putting me off. Medium-high carbonation and a medium body.

Appearance: Pours out a clearish, garnet-hued body with a smallish, off-white head. Smell: A sweet and malty aroma with notes of dark, grainy wheat-based bread, dark brown sugar, dark caramel, and three Tootsie Rolls. Also some scents of chewing gum, clove, and dark fruitiness. Taste: Dark, bready toastiness with sweet flourishes of brown sugar and nutty dark caramel. Hint of Tootsie Rolls. Flavors of bubble gum, spice, and dark fruits join the fray. Another hint of Tootsie Rolls. Oh-so mild touch of banana. Very light bitterness. Final pinch of clove spice in the otherwise sweetish, malty finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-plus carbonation. Fairly smooth mouthfeel. Drinkability: Well, it certainly isn’t everyday that you run into a dunkelweizen, though I’m glad I did. Makes for sweet, easy, lightly wheaty drinking on this Wednesday evening. It’s nice to see Great Divide churning out so many new beers this year.

Cloudy reddish brown color. Head is tan and fades rather quickly, lacing is very thin. Aroma of some sour dark fruit offset by roasted caramel malt. Taste is on the sweet side and the mouthfeel is slick. Taste does not have a ton of character overall.

Bottle courtesy of bu11zeye. Red orange pour, very clear. Dark fruit smell. Fresh and fruity. Dark malts with heavy fruit on the upfront. Some hef elements also with wheat and clove. Aftertaste is very desirable, lingering with tasty elements. I’m impressed.
