Tight silky white head and clear orange-copper body. Strong pine and grapefruit in the nose. Malts are mostly buried at first and then gradually reveal a cherry quality. Big woodsy hop flavor. Like a boreal forest with occasional fruits for gleaning. This is a hop monster. Fresh Hercules is a demi-god among Imperial IPAs (and Dreadnaught is a god). Ho-hum when not so fresh. apoptosis (1316), Long Island, New York, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Jul 10, 2005 Dark, barely cloudy and orange body, with a smallish white head. This is one potent beer! The aroma hits you with its powerful hops, slightly malty and banana esters. Somewhat earthy flavor, nad again, powerful hops here. Very well-balanced for the high alcohol hoppiness in this I/IPA. Bitterness is "just right", and it is gneerally very heavy. Not too sweet, and not too dry. notalush (2686), Denver, Colorado, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 10, 2005 Cloudy straw color with minimal lace - very herbal and spicy aroma, with some yeasty mustiness, a tiny bit of sweetness (honey, toffee) - not as sweet as a lot of imperial IPAs, which is a nice change, but still malty enough to make things interesting (some caramel, grain and rolled oats give it an almost barleywine-like quality) - hoppy, but not overpowering - reminds me of 90 minute and Ruination - heavy but very drinkable. badgerben (3605), Blaine, Minnesota, USA

Once that settled down, a huge aroma of grapefruit is presented. Definite hops, but the grapefruit blows away the floral hints. Taste has a moderate malt base, but this is definitely about letting hops run free. The pine didn’t show for me, but the grapefruit did recess enough to let the floral come out to play. A wonderfully balanced IIPA. Even though the citrus was very up front and malt was pretty quiet, it never seemed overpowering and off-putting. MAP (1089), Lakewood, Ohio, USA

Hoppyness is definately strait out of an Imperial court. This has a very nice sweetness at first, then you dont get much more because it hits you like a ton of bricks. Nose is surprisingly malt-centric considering the style--notes of honey, toffee, citrus and pine. Rather reserved hopwise for a IIPA as well and I actually give it credit for being a creative brew in this respect (it’s slightly ironical that I now consider less hoppy beers to be creative) but it’s still a goddamn IIPA so those hops aren’t hiding. Well balanced and lovely. leitrim65 (398), Seattle, Washington, USA

The aroma gives off a subdued hint of what’s to come, with gentle notes of citrus, pine, and a touch of sweet malt. Big, creamy and smooth. With malt flavorings that are quickly overwhelmed by a citrus hop punch. My kind of beer. Awesome!
