Commercial Description:
English-style Old Ale. Hibernation Ale is Colorado’s original strong ale -- it has been Great Divide’s winter seasonal each year since 1995. Hibernation’s massive flavors are so intense that it requires over three months of aging each year. This lengthy aging process gives Hibernation its revered malty richness, complex hop profile and hearty warming character, which is perfect right out of the bottle or cellared for longer periods of time.

very nice english hop aroma with a touch of oak and roasted nuts. dark opaque ruby aroma with a thin light head. nice hop profile in the up-front flavor but a sweet maltiness unbalances the finish which doesnt live up to the promise of the aroma.

Bottled on Nov 11 2008 enjoyed 1.4.09. Pours a dark deep mahogany with a lovely red hue and a thick creamy frothy beige head that sticks around forever. Love the aroma, dusty chocolate, light toasty crystal malt, maybe some nutmeg, really sophisticated for Great Divide. Wow, this is a delicious complete unique sophisticated beer, very impressed. Really quite dry, chalky coca powder, nutmeg, lightly caramelized malts, a touch of roasted malts, some woodiness, and a nice laid-back piney hop bite. Super smooth and soft, the flavors are so well in-tune with each other while completely disguising the alcohol. Quick chocolate nutmeg finish. This is fantastic. Another example of how a beer’s sum can be greater than its parts in this relatively simple beer. I don’t see this getting any better with age, its flavors are already pretty mellowed and the strong hops add greatly to gentle malts. Super drinkable with a chalky medium watery mouthful with very soft carbonation. 8.5.9.5.17 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [Bottled on 9.17.09 enjoyed 12.4.09] This bottle is quite hoppy, juicy, but has considerable amounts of acetaldehyde which really ruins it... 8.4.8.4.15

2008 bottle. pours a light brown with a quarter inch off white yellow head... which does not last long. wonderful citrus hop laced aroma with some deep malts as well. very soft on the sides, medium body, extremely smooth over the top of the palate. nice biting bitterness up front with some caramel and a touch of alcohol. excellent finish with the perfect blend of hops and malts. this is a wonderful beer.

October 29, 2008 vintage. Dark amber pour into off white foamy head that melts into heavy lacing on the glass. Aroma of caramel malt and piney hops. Initial flavor of spice, sweet malt fading into a warming bitter hoppy finish.
