Commercial Description:
English-style Old Ale. Hibernation Ale is Colorado’s original strong ale -- it has been Great Divide’s winter seasonal each year since 1995. Hibernation’s massive flavors are so intense that it requires over three months of aging each year. This lengthy aging process gives Hibernation its revered malty richness, complex hop profile and hearty warming character, which is perfect right out of the bottle or cellared for longer periods of time.

8.1% ABV through 2008
8.7% ABV in 2009

Perfume resin hops with some real bite. Large frothy off white head. Sparkling clear with no particles. Lightly acidic initial flavor with a light bitter finish. Medium to full bodied with lively carbonation. A hoppy beer from a hoppy brewing company.

Bottle. Pours a clear deep mahogoney with a slight amber tinge. Tand head that flattens but does not fade. Good lacing. Aroma of citrus hops, some toffee malts with some chocolate powder, a bit of alcohol, berries and unripe plums. A touch of leather as well. Reminds me of NB 2 Below. Taste is toffee, chocolate, leather, and nuts. THere are some faint hops in the mid taste and a berry and chalky malt finish with a bit of alcohol and bitterness in the aftertaste. Moderate carbonation and a touch creamy mouthfeel and just ever so slightly warming.

Mmmmm.....now this will warm you on a cold winter night. ABV is solid, especially for a winter beer. Alcohol not present in the flavor. Very hearty to drink, with plenty of malt (caramel, biscuit, toffee) to keep you warm.

Very nice reddish brown pour with a nice but small head and solid lacing. One of those beers that actually taste better a little warmer, the heat brings out the caramel and tamps down the alcohol flavor a bit. Nice dried fruit flavor backdrop as well, very tasty and yet another winner from Great Divide.

On tap at Magoos. Big earthy strong ale with caramel, almonds, tootsie roll flavors, Dark Amber color, not much head but nice lacing. Alcohol is prevalent and pleasant with a sweet finish

11.16.08 Bottle given to me by Adamskillin. I’m so happy that the winter seasonals have started to roll in. They warm my heart and cockles. This brew from Great Divide was no exception and I will seek it out immediately. Very delicious.

Pours a brown/amber color with a nice white head leaving some lacing. Aroma of toffee, malt, dried fruits, plums, hops, citrus. Flavour is quite sweet at first but passes over in a pleasant bitterness. There’s notes of malt, toffee, dried fruits, hops and grapefruit. Full bodied, creamy and oily, average carbonation with a long, bitter, warming, finish. Very balanced. This is a very good beer, I must say. It’s something to sip slowly during these cold winter months. It probably improves with age, but I’m not sure if I can afford another bottle at the moment (it’s so many other beers coming to Sweden right now).
