Commercial Description:
English-style Old Ale. Hibernation Ale is Colorado’s original strong ale -- it has been Great Divide’s winter seasonal each year since 1995. Hibernation’s massive flavors are so intense that it requires over three months of aging each year. This lengthy aging process gives Hibernation its revered malty richness, complex hop profile and hearty warming character, which is perfect right out of the bottle or cellared for longer periods of time.

Aroma of slight vanilla, spruce, and caramel. It poured a dark maroon color with great head and lacing. This brew has an initial taste of herbs, grass, and has a strong roasted malty finish. Decent on the way down. Overall this is another good reason to go to the beer store during winter.

Bottle: The aroma contains lots of chocolate and caramel along with some roasted nuts and alcohol. It pours a transparent reddish-orange with a quarter inch beige head. The flavor starts with some chocolate and caramel. The finish has some watery roasted nut flavors with some mild citrusy hops and just a hint of alcohol. Overall the flavor is pretty bland. It’s medium bodied with mild carbonation and a soft mouthfeel. I was really looking forward to this one, but it fell way short of expectations. I’ll have to give it another shot soon.

09-DEC-2009, bottle @home. Beautifull dark amber with fluffy off-white head. It looks like an old ale:-) Nose is quite complex with roasted malts, and some hoppy tones as well. Definately some barley wine tones in there due to the heavy malt precense, but then the hops and alcohol kick in, and I know it is no barley wine. Lovely aroma. Taste is malty sweet charamel, very nutty, rye bread, mint, grape fruit, and loads more. Very long and very bitter aftertaste. I love this beer. just my type. Complex, balance between malts and hops, and then the high alcohol level. Great, Great Divide!

I like this one but I must say that the taste is a bit nutty. Good overall smell and feel. Taste is a bit long lasting in the mouth with several notes. Good overall.

Deep amber-ruby pour with a loose, lasting, off-white head. The aroma is subtly roasty with notes of toasted nuts, cocoa, faint dark fruit, and a gentle noble hop spice. The flavor if full and earthy with lots of caramel, roast, and toasted nuts. There’s also a hint of plum and fig with a pronounced noble hop bitterness on the finish. The body is creamy, medium-full, with soft but plentiful carbonation and a little bit of alcohol warming. After a few sips the alcohol starts to come out in the flavor, so it’s not super well hidden and tastes a bit bitter.

330 ML bottle in the USA. Cloudy, dark amber color w/a moderate white head. Roasted malt aroma, burnt malt flavor. Not roasted, burnt. hoppy w/a bitter finish. This one didn’t do much for me, the longer I drank it the less I liked it.

Sampled courtesy of CUJO. Poured ruby dark brown in a wine glass. Tastes of dark fruits, sweet malts, and simple spices. Pretty basic but still powerful. I could see this being a nice winter warmer.
