Commercial Description:
English-style Old Ale. Hibernation Ale is Colorado’s original strong ale -- it has been Great Divide’s winter seasonal each year since 1995. Hibernation’s massive flavors are so intense that it requires over three months of aging each year. This lengthy aging process gives Hibernation its revered malty richness, complex hop profile and hearty warming character, which is perfect right out of the bottle or cellared for longer periods of time.

Bottle. Pour is a dark brown, but lets a bit of reddish light in around the edges. Finger high head dies and leaves little more than a thin scum on the surface. Aromas are of amber malts with a touch or a roasty character with sawdust an chocolate. Flavors are interesting... starting out with a chocolate malt presence that gives way to a heavy pine/resin hops finish. Smooth transition between these two flavors, but definitely a strange pair of bedfellows.

(Tap) Pours a hazy brown color with a small tan head. Dry, dusty aroma includes cocoa and a bit of vanilla. Taste includes chocolate and faint java notes, in addition to a crisp hoppy bite towards the end. Silky smooth mouthfeel and above average palate. A great winter beer, in my opinion.

12oz bottle pours a deep brown with a moderate off white head. Aroma seems to be a lot of dark chocolate. Taste is of toffee and chocolate with a slight hop bitterness to balance it out. I enjoyed this beer.

Bottled. Clear red-brown colour with fluffy pale head. Aroma is rich with earthy hops, nuts and milk chocolate. Very soft mouthfeel, with hazelnuts, caramel and chocolate. The alcohol really shines through like never before, and there is a hop bitterness that is felt pretty harsh and astringent. Some parts of the flavour holds a grapey/piney hoppiness. Good beer. although minor flaws.

Bottle. Deep red/brown color with a beige head. Aroma: Spicy and bitter hops, sweet toasted malt, chocolate, toffee, alcohol, dried fruit. Flavor: Sweet and malty at first, then bitter and roasted. Notes of caramel, toffee, chocolate, alcohol, pine, flowers and dried fruit. Smooth and creamy moutfeel.

Poured from a 12oz bottle and served in a pint glass. This beer poured a completely clear, dark red hued amber color. A medium-sized tan head quickly faded away into a thin layer of foam. Some heavy lacing coated the entire glass. The aroma of the beer was made up of roasted caramel malts, toffee, mild bakers chocolate, and also some floral hops. The flavor included pale English malts, caramel, light chocolate, and mildly bitter pine. The mouthfeel was full-bodied with light carbonation. A very tasty brew. If it had to be categorized, I think it would be considered an English DIPA. Well done.

on tap @ papago. pours a dark red amber with a white head that fades to a ring. sweet aroma...brown sugar, toffee, malt, orange and english spiciness. flavor is much the same with the addition of some grassy hops and an alcohol burn when i exhale. it finishes lightly bitter and quite dry with a lingering taste of grassiness and spices. medium bodied with a creamy texture.

Orange-copper color with simple tan head. Aroma of grain and coriander. Medium body with mellow mouthfeel. Flavor ends with a orange and cherry. I was a little disappointed in this beer.
