Commercial Description:
English-style Old Ale. Hibernation Ale is Colorado’s original strong ale -- it has been Great Divide’s winter seasonal each year since 1995. Hibernation’s massive flavors are so intense that it requires over three months of aging each year. This lengthy aging process gives Hibernation its revered malty richness, complex hop profile and hearty warming character, which is perfect right out of the bottle or cellared for longer periods of time.

The first thing I noticed about this ale was the dark amber color. The second thing I noticed was the very rich malty taste that left an afterthought on my pallet reminiscent of chocolate... and mountains.

Second time around (12/07), not remembering that I had tried it before: Damn, I’m good. 3.5 is right on. A reasonably tasty beer but nothing really to get worked up about.

I get a bit of fruit off the aroma; first impression is that it bears considerable resemblance to Victory Old Horizontal or one of Dogfish Head’s barlewines (Immort Ale and/or Olde School). Not as rich and thick in body or flavor, though. Maybe more like North Coast Old Stock Ale (also 3.5) with a bit of added spiciness. Arrogant Bastardy in appearance, but not quite as much head retention. There, referencing the known to describe the presumably unknown; how does a review get more helpful than that? You’re welcome. (Dry and lingering finish.)

Pours a dark copper color with a tan head. Aroma is of caramel malts, nuts, spices, floral hops, alcohol and a little roasted malts. Flavor starts off sweet with caramel and dark fruits. Gives way to roasted malts, nuts, spices, and floral hops. Finish is dry with a little alcohol warming. Wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked this one up but I’m not regretting that decision. Very delicious.

Bottle: Pours a red/brown color with off-white head. Aroma is of carmel malts and dark fruits and some hops as well. Flavor is malty and juicy dark fruits with some roasted malt flavors as well. Moderate hop bitterness throughout also. Lots of flavors in this one.
