Commercial Description:
English-style Old Ale. Hibernation Ale is Colorado’s original strong ale -- it has been Great Divide’s winter seasonal each year since 1995. Hibernation’s massive flavors are so intense that it requires over three months of aging each year. This lengthy aging process gives Hibernation its revered malty richness, complex hop profile and hearty warming character, which is perfect right out of the bottle or cellared for longer periods of time.

Amber body with small off white head. Aroma is caramel malts and light allspice. Quite rich upfront with a sweet profile before drying and hinting of a brandy burn as it goes down.

Bottle. Ruby / amber pour with a very thin head. Malty aroma with hints of oranges and yeast. The malt aroma actually reminds me of the sam adams oktoberfest. The carbonation is a little high. I don’t think the dry-hopped flavor goes well with the malt in this one. It just doesn’t blend or progress well.

Pours clear ruby with a thick persistent creamy light tan head and superb lacing. Aroma is complex and dominated by roasted malts and lots of peppery spice with some flowery hops on the swirl. Flavor follows and is very full with deep roasted malts. Good hop profile comes out in a dry, but flavorful and not overly bitter finish. Medium full bodied, with moderate carbonation. Smooth and warming but not hot. Very nice winter-influenced strong ale. Seems like this malt profile will age well....I think I am going to lay a few of these down.

On tap--Poured a murky black body with amber hints. Non existent head. Boozy, malty, slightly hoppy nose. Sharp, very carbonated mouth feel. Spiced with nutmeg and perhaps allspice. Robust , roasty, and somewhat hot on tongue. Alcohol presence appeared more than 8.1%. A sipper and real winter warmer brew. Quite nice, but not excellent.

Poured a mahogany color, with a dense and bubbly head. Spice and malt on the nose, plus a bunch of hop. Leather, caramel, some soapy notes, but also cinnamon and nutmeg, C-hops. Chocolate on the palate at first, quickly growing very dry, with assertive hops and nutmeg. Cane sugar, espresso, caramel... quite a lot going on, but it’s all in balance. Finishes smooth and rounded, yet dry and spicy. Rich-bodied, pretty heavy, and also low on CO2 - one to drink slowly. But definitely a nice one.

12 oz. bottle - clear and dark red with quickly fading tan head; aromas and flavors of alcohol seem high for the content; malty finish

Sweet and malty. Definite alcohol presence in the finish but not overdone. Balanced throughout, and very enjoyable.
