Commercial Description:
English-style Old Ale. Hibernation Ale is Colorado’s original strong ale -- it has been Great Divide’s winter seasonal each year since 1995. Hibernation’s massive flavors are so intense that it requires over three months of aging each year. This lengthy aging process gives Hibernation its revered malty richness, complex hop profile and hearty warming character, which is perfect right out of the bottle or cellared for longer periods of time.

8.1% ABV through 2008
8.7% ABV in 2009

Pours a dark copper color with a tan head. Aroma is of caramel malts, nuts, spices, floral hops, alcohol and a little roasted malts. Flavor starts off sweet with caramel and dark fruits. Gives way to roasted malts, nuts, spices, and floral hops. Finish is dry with a little alcohol warming. Wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked this one up but I’m not regretting that decision. Very delicious.

Had this beer on 2/12/2006. Aroma is a sweet rich roasted scent. Color is a dark amber with good carbonation and a nice head. Taste is heavy and rich. Starting with a full body it goes down smooth with a rich feel. Finish comes in sweet with a sharp feel and ends with a full bitterness. In the end it leaves you with a warm feel. Overall its a bit rich and sharp for me but it is a good Winter Brew and seems to fit in its category.

12 oz bottle - 2005 vintage

Thanks to Tom (CaptainCougar) for sending this as a bonus in a trade a few months ago. It was really good even though for some reason I was thinking it would be a barleywine. For a two year old beer it has held up well and I imagine it could take another year or two without any problems. I’m unlikely to pick up another bottle simply due to the sheer volume of other things in my queue but if you get the chance to try this it is worthwhile.

Aroma / Appearance - The flat deep brown body had a very short lived head and minimal carbonation. The nose was caramel, black cherries, cooled sun tea and black licorice. There were some hops evident but they were old from age. As it oxidizes the nose begins to lighten up.

Flavor / Palate - Chewy toffee, molasses and alcohol are succeeded by a dry papery aftertaste. For an 8% ABV beer it was very drinkable. The middle of the bottle reminded me of carbonated iced tea with a handful of pop rocks tossed in for extra measure. The finish was bitter and lingered on the back of the throat. This isn’t too bad though I would like to have compared a fresh bottle to see how it has aged.
