Commercial Description:
English-style Old Ale. Hibernation Ale is Colorado’s original strong ale -- it has been Great Divide’s winter seasonal each year since 1995. Hibernation’s massive flavors are so intense that it requires over three months of aging each year. This lengthy aging process gives Hibernation its revered malty richness, complex hop profile and hearty warming character, which is perfect right out of the bottle or cellared for longer periods of time.

Great beer that pours a very dark brilliant ruby color that reflects light almost. Very pretty to look at. The flavors are so varied in this one it’s fantastic. I get soy sauce, smoke, peat smoke, toffee, hops, and some beef jerky. Mmmm. Very interesting and cold weathery!

Bottle as part of a tasting at Catskeller. Pours a clear copper color with a medium-sized tan head. Chocolate and caramel malts on the nose along with hops, brown sugar, and wood. The flavor follows suit, with more caramel and wood coming through. Medium bodied, rich, smooth, and very dry, with warming alcohol.

Smells chocolatey and roasty. Deep brown with a big head that fades fast. It is smooth and chewy with cocoa chocolate strengths and a clean English finish. Excellent fall brew.

12oz bottle, 2008 vintage, poured into a snifter. Pours a really nice deep copper with a huge billowy beige head that shows excellent retention and lacing. Really good looking beer here. The aroma is very sweet with lots of caramel malts and toffee. Some brown sugar and dark fruits mix in as well as a hint of chocolate. The taste is excellent with the typical old ale tastes coming out, namely caramel malts, toffee and dark fruit. But there is also plenty of chocolate and brown sugar, and maybe some hops though I think they’ve probably faded over the last year. The mouthfeel is pretty full bodied for the style with good soft carbonation. Sticky sweet overall feel. This is another solid beer from Great Divide and one that I’ve taken too long to try. Excellent.

Pours a really beautiful deep ruby color with a thin off white head. Aroma is massive malt, sweet malt, biscuity, bread, roasted malt, malt malt malt. One giant malt bomb. Flavor is similar. Almost cloying, but not in a sweet way, just this intense malt flavor the peaks immediately and never quite subsides. Massive malt bomb, but not terrible.
