Commercial Description:
English-style Old Ale. Hibernation Ale is Colorado’s original strong ale -- it has been Great Divide’s winter seasonal each year since 1995. Hibernation’s massive flavors are so intense that it requires over three months of aging each year. This lengthy aging process gives Hibernation its revered malty richness, complex hop profile and hearty warming character, which is perfect right out of the bottle or cellared for longer periods of time.

[Vintage 2000, sampled October 2004] A deep red-brown beer with an orange head. The aroma is sweet with loads of overripe fruits as well as slight hints of alcohol. The flavor is sweet with notes of alcohol, wood, and overripe fruit. This beer has really aged well - and definately improves by aging. [Vintage 2003 sampled September 2004] A hazy red beer with a nice creamy orange-brown head. The aroma is sweet and very hoppy which also includes notes of hop-oils and grass. The flavor is sweet is quite spicy and contains notes of berries, prunes, and fruit in the start, which in the latter part is being overtaken by roasted almost smoked notes, to give it a dry end. (Bottle 35,5 cl) Ever so slightly hazy with a small, off-white head. Aroma of burned caramel. Medium body with very typically American, fat caramel malt and aroma hops without being very bitter. Somewhat biscuity. OK as such, just not very interesting. 050107

12 fl oz bottle. Pours clear and deep amber, golden, with a lacing light orange head. Wood hops aroma, a bit like wet wood. Flavour is smooth and dry hoppy yet with a nice chocolate smoothness and mild sweetness followed by a light liqourice sharpness and solid bitterness into the finish. Extremely flavourful, almost overempowering.

Bottled. Clear copper colour, rich, firm head. Strong chocolate aroma. Sweet and malty. Potent flavour of chocolate sauce, tar, grapefruity hops and salt. Solid and warming with fairly soft mouthfeel. Long salty bitter finish. An excellent, hoppy winter warmer

Bottled (Bottled 2006). Murky reddish brown colour with a long lasting yellowish beige creamy head, leaves nice lace. Aroma is nuts, plum, raisins, caramel malts, slight alcohol and a nice touch of hops. Flavour is roasted coffee, malts, some chocolate, bittering hops and slightly spicy. A very nicely warming brew, that is enormously wellbalanced. Leaves a nice roasted and hoppy aftertaste.
