Commercial Description:
English-style Old Ale. Hibernation Ale is Colorado’s original strong ale -- it has been Great Divide’s winter seasonal each year since 1995. Hibernation’s massive flavors are so intense that it requires over three months of aging each year. This lengthy aging process gives Hibernation its revered malty richness, complex hop profile and hearty warming character, which is perfect right out of the bottle or cellared for longer periods of time.

Pours a really beautiful deep ruby color with a thin off white head. Aroma is massive malt, sweet malt, biscuity, bread, roasted malt, malt malt malt. One giant malt bomb. Flavor is similar. Almost cloying, but not in a sweet way, just this intense malt flavor the peaks immediately and never quite subsides. Massive malt bomb, but not terrible.

Pour of a dark red from a bottle. On the nose, there is a very strong and sweet oatmeal presence. Lacing on the glass is very sticky, much like an adult movie. Oatmeal comes through on the initial sip, with a few oats making an impression. Body is medium/heavy, akin to syrup. The taste is rich with some very strong malts with a sweetness that is not overpowering of the rest of the beer.

Pours out amber with lots of creamy head. Taste is sweet malt and bitter hops. Roasty and sweet toffee flavors upfront with some bitterness from the spicey hops. Great caramel and spice notes. Good balance crisp and complex. One of my favorite holiday brews.

Leathery malt aroma. Clear chestnut color, thin yellow head, good lacing. Harmonious boysenberry and leather flavor. Not one of my favorite styles, but unique and tasty.

Caremely, malty, hoppy, alcoholy. Not big on this one...I was alone in this opinion at the table.

Enjoyed via draft in a pub glass. The beer pours a dark but semi-translucent brown color, with a small and thing off-white head. The nose gives more of a porter-like character than one reflecting old ale; ash and roasted malt character. The palate is fairly complex, and is subtle given the abv of the beer. Roasty, slightly ashy, and generally malt-forward without much hop character. Overall, it doesn’t seem to have the overall complexity that such classics as Old Peculiar possess, but it is in any case a competent example of the style.

I had this in the bottle at Redcoat Tavern in Royal Oak, MI. It was a solid ale, that was true to the style, and was overall a great brew. Poured a dark brown with cream head. I liked it because it had some hop character, which a lot of old ales don’t have. Cheers!

12 oz bottle from TC Craft. Deep brown color, big foamy tan head. Malty aroma, small notes of oak and coffee. Flavor is big, sweet, malty, oaky. Palate is thick, chewy and like the bottle says, this beer is very robust. Amazingly good beer.
