| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | May 27, 2008 Pours used motor oil black with a big, dense two finger mocha head that lingers for ages leaving great lacing. This is one helluva good looking brew. Smell is big and complex with semi-sweet dark chocolate, roasted malts and some of the oak as well. There is also a strong licorice and vanilla scent on top of that. Big roasted malt flavor up front which gives way to the sweetness of the dark chocolate and vanilla. The finish has a strong oak presence with a hint of citrus hops that lends to a bit of bitterness along with the smooth malts. Mouthfeel is extremely creamy and smooth with moderate carbonation and coats your mouth with the sweet malty chocolate taste. I would call this the most drinkable beer I’ve ever tasted. It’s definitely a sipper and like a great dessert, one for savoring slowly. Highly recommended. nbutler11 (760), Phoenix, Arizona, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | May 27, 2008 Pours like motor oil with a very faint tan head. The oak doesn’t hit you until the first taste, but it’s welcomed and perefectly compliments the rich espresso taste. Definitely a treat. inkubus27 (250), Highland, Indiana, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | May 26, 2008 This is truly not my idea of an appealing stout being that it’s way too bitter, and not in a good way. The bitterness leaves no hop flavor and i can’t detect much of an aroma, just a very resinous bitterness that lingers. Other than that the brew looks solid has excellent mouthfeel and after it warms up has a decent aroma to it. All in all, i wouldn’t buy this again. dkachur (2376), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 22, 2008 Bottle from Sam’s Quik Shop in Durham, NC. Pours pure black with a medium tan head. Very rich aroma of esperesso and roasted malt. Oak comes through in the taste more than the aroma. The taste has notes of roasted malt, oak, buttery french toast, spiciness. Warming alcohol presence. Thick and chewy texture. GMCC2181 (865), Bear/Elkton, Delaware, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 21, 2008 Bottle: Nice roasted malt aroma. I couldnt pick up on any oak aroma. Poured into a snifter, dark black, thick with a coffee colored small head. Intially a taste of roasted malt, coffee flavor and in the after taste a nice bitter hoppiness to it! Smooth, and I like the bitterness in a stout. Some chocolate thrown in. I could not pick up on any oak flavor which is kind of nice because sometimes when a beer is oak aged it is over done... Good stout! carruthm (1139), Seattle, Washington, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 19, 2008 A thinnish black pour with a tan one-finger head that leaves a bit of lacing and settles down to just a tan cap fairly quickly. Aroma is quite strong of caramel and deep malts with chocolate and coffee and dark fruits. definitely can taste the bitters and hops in a surprisingly dry imperial stout. hellbilly (1532), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 19, 2008 pours a medium viscosity impenetrably black body with a orange-brown head which fades at a medium pace to a film. juicy chocolate aroma like brownies combines with oak, black raisins cooked in red wine, sugar, vanilla and star anise and a bitter/earthy character (probably from the barrel). the palate is dry for an IS so, that’s a good thing. medium sweetness, chocolate, ash, roasty grain, grassy hops and alcohol all noted in the flavor. dry bitter finish from the hops (and alcohol?). coffee-like nuttiness in the aftertaste. full bodied. creamy and soft with a high enough level of acidity to keep it from being too rich. if this were in a 12oz bottle i’m sure it’d be better as it gets rather boring and two dimensional... gonzo46and2 (108), Tampa, Florida, USA
| 4.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | May 17, 2008 Phenominal. Best imperial stout out of the five I’ve tasted yet. Great big aroma of coffee, chocolate, smoke, vanilla, and on and on. Complex. Not too bitter showing a very calculated balance. Great beer all around and the best imperial stout I’ve tasted yet.
