Commercial Description:
Old Ruffian is a hefty, hop-forward Barley Wine. Seemingly mellow at first sniff, with its subtle fruit aromas and complex caramel sweetness, this deep mahogany-hued ale quickly shows its true character marked by bold hop flavors and massive hop bitterness. Old Ruffian’s rich, slightly creamy, caramel malt mouthfeel balances its grapefruit, pine, and floral hop flavors, working wonders on your palate.
A mind-numbing 90 International Bittering Units (IBUs).

BierKoning. Amber body with slight head. Hoppy, fruit and sweet nose. Taste of hops (as always with Great Divide), some malts and fruits. Nicely done.

Pours a dark mahogany with a frothy tan head. Aroma of citrus and caramel..subtle hint of chocolate as well. Nice full body with sweet malts and plenty of hops both upfront and in the finish. Although the hops are front and center, it is still surprisingly balanced considering the high IBU’s. Overall a nice Barley Wine.

A good ol kick to chops. Pours a beautiful mahogany red, with a half inch head (poured quite vigourously). Sweet nose of caramel and hops. Very smooth and full bodied wih a malty hop wallop on the end. Lots of alcohol heat here. One of the better barleywines I have had, along with the Old Guardian.

bottled. pours deep red with a thin light tan head. Aroma of grapefruit, chocolate and caramel. Flavors follow suit with the bitterness of hops, carmel, burnt toast and citrus rind. Has a strong finish with alcohol forward. Decent will buy this again.

Bottle pours a dark amber chestnut color with a thin tan head. Aroma is a nice mixture of sweet caramel malts, dried fruit, and citrus pine hops. Excellent bold flavor! At first sip you are greeted with tons of hop bitterness on the front end, followed by some caramel malt sweetness in the middle and ending with a lingering hop bitterness in the finish. There are some hints of smokiness hidden within the bitter aftertaste as well. A slight warming feeling from the alcohol, but otherwise the 10+% is barely noticeable. A very nice and balanced barley wine.
