Commercial Description:
Old Ruffian is a hefty, hop-forward Barley Wine. Seemingly mellow at first sniff, with its subtle fruit aromas and complex caramel sweetness, this deep mahogany-hued ale quickly shows its true character marked by bold hop flavors and massive hop bitterness. Old Ruffian’s rich, slightly creamy, caramel malt mouthfeel balances its grapefruit, pine, and floral hop flavors, working wonders on your palate.
A mind-numbing 90 International Bittering Units (IBUs).

Bottle. Dark amber in color with a thick head. Strong malt and alcohol aroma. Sweet malt, caramel, and hops make up the flavors of this strong barley wine. Although, not as hoppy as some of the others that I’ve had.

Bottle from bigmmartin. Burgundy with a nice tan head. Aroma caramel malt and floral hops. Flavor is barely sweet then very bitter with a long aftertaste. Good mouthfeel and carbonation. I’m not too impressed but this is a nice brew.

Bottle. (1 pint, 6 fl. oz) Pours a dark red/brown colour with off white head. Aroma is hops, malt, spices, toffee, caramel. Mouthfeel is great. Palate is slightly thick and creamy. Aroma is caramel, toffee, slight chocolate, before the hops kick in and tickles your palate and the alcohol warms up your throat and brings a couple of drops of sweat to your forehead. A lot hoppier than the previous Barley Wines I have tasted. But still a great beer! Original rating 7/4/8/4/17 = 4 Re-rated 31/08-08 Tap at Plan B in Cph/DK. Unclear and hazy brown/amber colour with off-white head. Aroma is hops, flowers, fruit, malt, caramel. Flavor is very hoppy, but still very sweet with liquorice and a very pleasant bitterness that lasts a long time. Excellent beer.

Opaque red-brown body... bit of a gusher. Off white beige persistent head. Malty, heavy fruity nose... dusty and I didn’t like it much. Slightly sticky maltiness, American hops giving a good bitterness. Dusty, herbal, some pine, gummi bears, sweet. Tasty but not all that complicated.

No ABV written on the label. Muddy brown coloured, medium sized beige head, strong toffee nose. Hoppy herbal with notes of caramel, toffee and alcohol. A way too sweet.

Wow, this is an intense beer. Bottle: pours dark red color with orange hues. An intense hop aroma with small caramel notes. Initial taste consists of slightly sweet chocolate and caramel malt followed by an intense hop taste that takes over. Being a hop man I thought it was nice, and I thought this could very easily be called an imperial IPA. This beer is not for the faint of heart and must be sipped.

This is a pretty great barley wine. I’m on a barley wine kick lately and I’m not sure why. Looks sexy when it pours, a rich mahogany with an off white head. Aroma had a lot of hops, a lot of malt, and a lot of alcohol. The flavor, unsurprisingly, was similar. There was a lot of caramel, some wood, and some chocolate. finish is long, dry, and had a lot of alcohol. This is a great barley wine, and fulfilled my knack for something really hoppy.

Color is a rich mahogany brown, nice and clear. It pours with a nice thick tan head. Aroma is fairly strong and malty, definitely inviting. Flavor has a pretty fierce alcohol bite, but once you get past that it is pleasant, smooth, malty with caramel and fruit hints. Definitely a beer to be sipped and savored.
