Commercial Description:
Old Ruffian is a hefty, hop-forward Barley Wine. Seemingly mellow at first sniff, with its subtle fruit aromas and complex caramel sweetness, this deep mahogany-hued ale quickly shows its true character marked by bold hop flavors and massive hop bitterness. Old Ruffian’s rich, slightly creamy, caramel malt mouthfeel balances its grapefruit, pine, and floral hop flavors, working wonders on your palate.
A mind-numbing 90 International Bittering Units (IBUs).

Draught at the brewery in Denver. Aroma is sweet and hoppy. Flavor is dominated more by the sweet malt flavors, mostly caramel.

Picked up a single 22-oz bomber from Warehouse Liquors in Duluth, Minnesota. Pours a semi-clear reddish amber brew with a thick off-white head that has some good retention and lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, cotton candy, a touch of citrus zest, dark raisins and some toffee. Taste is medium bodied, light carbonated, with flavors of semi-dry caramel malt, citrusy/pine hops, with a some dried dark fruits. Finish is slightly semi-dry, hoppy with a little oak caramel aftertaste that leaves behind some light mild bitterness character. An interesting barley wine but a bit more hoppy compared to most others I’ve tried.

Clear read pour with thick light tan head. Piney hop aroma, though not as intense as other beers. Sweet start gives way to loads of hops. Chocolate and honey hints. Malty aftertaste. Very good

Draught at the GD tap room. Big, hoppy barleywine. Deep copper coloured with a frothy tan head. Huge hops in the aroma but also some caramel and candy. Flavour is more hops and caramel but also some bourbon and candied fruit. Slight piney bitterness in the finish. Pleasant and enjoyable.

Bottle, bought @ Øltorvet.dk.
Pours a wonderful brownish red with a big, creamy yellowish head on top. Aroma is hoppy, nice fruitiness - both from hops and malt. Grapefruit, orange peel and raisins. Lightly vinious. Medium carbonation, wonderfully oily mouthfeel. Flavour is greatly sweet at first, lots of caramel, vinious, port, oakiness. Finish is nicely bitter with a clear dose of hops flavours. Pine and grapefruit dominate amongst the wonderful alcohol.

22 oz. bottle, coppery nose with nice caramel colored head, amber orange color, starts off smooth barley wine and then hits you with the hops and alcohol, would have liked a little smoother finish
