Commercial Description:
Old Ruffian is a hefty, hop-forward Barley Wine. Seemingly mellow at first sniff, with its subtle fruit aromas and complex caramel sweetness, this deep mahogany-hued ale quickly shows its true character marked by bold hop flavors and massive hop bitterness. Old Ruffian’s rich, slightly creamy, caramel malt mouthfeel balances its grapefruit, pine, and floral hop flavors, working wonders on your palate.
A mind-numbing 90 International Bittering Units (IBUs).

This beer has a wave of always changing aroma’s. Very nice. Different hops, some caramel malts and dried fruits, cognac style. A little hazy, brown-reddish coloured with a thin, off-white head. Taste is sweet, and has hopbitterness, cognac, flowers, pine, some caramel malts, some fruits, bit dusty and with some warming alcohol. This beer is very good. The hops work out well. Nice.

500 mL. Slight haze on the copper-amber body with a large lasting foam above. Sweetish evergreen and slight citrus in the robust nose. Flavor is similar at first, then melts into a nice bitterness that last to the finish. Palate is medium-bodied, smooth, and fairly balanced: only slightly syrupy.

This beer poured a deep reddish brown with thin tan head. The aroma is of dark fruits, caramel, and hops. The flavor follows the same with the sweet flavors from the fruits and caramel upfront with a big hoppy bitterness in the background. As the beer warmed up the hops calmed down a bit, but they were still noticeable. This was definitely a full bodied beer that packed quite a punch. Had a nice creamy mouthfeel that finished with the hops and sweetness in the aftertaste. It was different for a barley wine, but the hops worked in this case and smoothed out nicely. Very nice brew.

A Great Barley-Wine ale. the caramel malts and hops make a great combination. The head is a dark brown and orange. The bitterness, the high IBU’s, is a great addition for this Barley Wine.
