DarkStar22769 (100), Ontario, Canada Aug 10, 2006 From 12 oz bottle in imperial pint glass. The aroma for this is ALL malt. It’s mocha that I smell...a lot of coffee with cream. The appearance is expected for a porter...opaque with that brown ruddiness at that point of the glass which is translucent. Head? Meh, not much of one at all. A very thin carbonation formed at the top in the middle of the glass. I taste buttery chocolate that clings to my cheeks after the swallow. It’s malty but I wouldn’t call it robust. I can taste what I think is black patent but I detect very little hop presence. I like this but that might speak more to the lack of a porter presence here in Ontario. I like porters with more of a punch but this one holds back. dkoonce (880), People’s Republic of Athens, Ohio, USA Aug 8, 2006 Dark brown, with a rich chocolate malt aroma. Heavy body, with a sweet warm character. Quite drinkable. tomhenderson (126), Carolinas area, USA Aug 8, 2006 12 oz bottle. Dark brown with slight ring of bubbles around the rim. Aroma is sweet with a chocolate nuttiness. Flavor is even sweeter with roasty malts finally plowing through in the end. This is a very nice porter. Caliber (9), Orlando, Florida, USA does not count Aug 8, 2006 Pours deep brown, almost black color with very little head, as typical with many porters. The aroma is incredible - caramel, chocolate and coffee. Spot on for a porter. Medium palate with a moderate amount of carbonation - to lively of a carbonation. Finishes quite thin and bitter, though, and this is not pleasing to me in a porter. There are some of the aromas in the flavor, though more of a roasted malt, coffee flavor than the chocolate or caramel I detected. That said, the flavor is really lacking and is quie subdued. Not going to make my list of porters to keep around, but an OK beer. OldMrCrow (1179), Seattle, Washington, USA Aug 5, 2006 Bottle.
Pours a dark brown with red highlights when held to the light, with a modest light-tan head.
The aroma is coffee and roasted grain; the flavor is minimal in its vinous elements, a bit of choolate, rounded, slightly smoky, a tad salty, leading into a lackluster and slightly metallic finish. Gentle but not under- carbonation makes it extremely drinkable.
This isn’t a bad beer; it’s perfectly drinkable, but with great porters such as Anchor and Fullers so readily available, I don’t see quite why I would return to this one. scania (184), Malmö, Sweden Aug 4, 2006 Updated: Jun 25, 2007Bottle. Dark almost black, but with reddish hues. Aroma of milk chocolate and roasted malt. Flavor of chocolate and coffee. Dry roasted finish. Good. lethe (168), Stony Brook by way of Cincinnati, New York, USA Aug 2, 2006 Typical porter pour with medium off-white head offers a nose of mostly burnt roast quality. Palate is even with a nice silken touch and medium body. Flavor is much more delicate than the nose: containing the advertised coffee and chocolate character and a long dry finish. Drinkable is an understatement. This is a porter for all occasions that pales only in that it is less than bold. Gr0ve (1382), Oslo, Norway Aug 2, 2006 355 ml bottle.Dark brown, but holds a reddish ruby apricot-like colour when held up against the light. Throws a thick fine-laced light brownish head. Some yeasty aromas. Yeasty flavours at first, then blackberry. Gentle and easy-drinking. Light-bodied, but holds a good soft texture. A bit boring.
