jvmiller (532), Bel Air, Maryland, USA Apr 3, 2009 Very roasted......chocolate and coffee...in both aroma and flavor. Subtle under-currents of dark sugar, caramel, toffee, etc. Not as bold as Oak-aged, but still a complex beer. hophead21112 (110), Louisville (LEWISville), Colorado, USA Apr 2, 2009 Opaque black pour with a nice two finger creamy mocha colored head, good retention & lacing, great appearance. Aroma is of dark chocolate and coffee. Flavor is roasted malt, finishes with the dark chocolate and a bitterness from the hops. Nicely balanced. A little alcohol at the end. Low carbonation and heavy on the tongue. Good finish, good beer overall. Flavors really come out as the beer warms up. Adam77 (407), Eastampton, New Jersey, USA Mar 30, 2009 Poured thick black with a creamy tan head. Aroma of roasted coffee. A roasted coffee feel with some chocolate. Finish was a little harsh. dreambrother (19), Bemidji, Minnesota, USA Mar 28, 2009 Poured dark, with a brown head. Nose was olives, alcohol, chocolate. Flavor was a bit on the heavy side alcohol-wise, but other than that I found chocolate, roasted coffee, smoke, malt. rdyck (4), Eagan, Minnesota, USA does not count Mar 27, 2009 Pours black with a thick mocha head that lingers. Great creamy/oily mouthfeel and complex flavor. This is a hoppier stout that reminds me of a better Imperial Porter. Nice roasted, malty flavor with a touch of coffee and chocolate balanced with a light hoppy pine/grapefuit bitterness. JaBier (1130), Capital City, Ohio, USA Mar 26, 2009 Sampled at the GD tasting at Blacklick Wine and Spirits on 3.26.09. Anxious to try this one because I haven’t had it since around 2005 and my tastes have changed since then. Bottled in January 2008. Black pour with a medium light brown head that is very sticky. Chocolatey aroma with some alcohol and plum. Chocolate malt aroma with dark fruit and a creamy, yet bitter coffee finish. Truly outstanding. Changed (161), Ithaca, New York, USA Mar 26, 2009 Updated: Mar 27, 200922oz bomber. Pours thick and black. Gorgeous dark brown head- best I’ve seen. Spotty lacing on my snifter. Smells like a fine espresso dipped in chocolate. Holding the stout in your mouth results in a melange of flavors: ranging from dark chocolate to thick espresso, this beer is marvelous. If you don’t believe me: take a sip, then do something else for 5 minutes... every 30 seconds you’ll discover a new flavor creeping into your mouth. I feel as if I’ve just eaten a 70% cocoa chocolate bar. After the next sip, I’m returned to Rostock, Germany. I’m sipping a double espresso at 11am on the harbor’s shore.
Finish is creamy smooth, hiding the alcohol well.
In conclusion, this is the best beer I’ve ever tasted. ansermadide (496), Kyle, Texas, USA Mar 26, 2009 12oz bottle at home on March 26, 2008. Another beer that I’m surprised I’ve never rated. Let this sucker warm up... Pours like filthy oil... beautiful. Its head brown with an almost purple hue. Aroma of roasted chocolate and coffee. This is so much better warmer than colder... its flavor is perfect for an imperial stout of this caliber. Its mouthfeel a little light, however, its alcohol presence is hidden very well. The finish is warm and lingering. Imperial stouts are almost as comforting as a good night’s rest. Excuse me while I finish this.
