EithCubes (2140), Indiana, USA May 1, 2008 Bomber. Huge rich chocolate aroma with light coffee and firm, rounding red berry. Pitch black, motor oil style, with a huge dark brown head, tinged with grey, tiny-bubbled and rocky, with great retention. Bitter taste full of chocolate but no roast, with light bittering from pleasantly present hops. Dark and slashing impy, earthy tones with some significant sweetness. Loads and loads of malt and just a touch of pine near the back end. Great with ice cream! Full body but not obese, aftertaste is a bit wearing. Slight prickling sensation after enough volume, hop-related for sure as the alcohol is well hidden and non-numbing. Dry aftertaste reminds of espresso, though only the aftertaste, as the malty sweetness drowns out any notes of coffee that may have been in the main body. Straightforward and extremely robust. matt7215 (942), Cambridge, Ontario, Canada May 1, 2008 bomber from a trade with thecheeseman. pours black with a mid sized tan head. aromas a weird caramel hop mess. thankfully this doesnt continue in the flavour. the flavours are huge and complex. lotsa great immpy stout maltiness and a ton of hops. very enjoyable. MrChopin (621), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA May 1, 2008 Nose of caramel with some burnt fruit, hint of smoke. Jet black appearance with rich, tan head. Initial flavor is sweet-dominated caramel that leaves milk chocolate on the tongue. As it warms, the hops linger a little longer, but it’s simpler than expected and just too sweet. At 9% ABV and the hefty 22oz size, you can’t knock them back too quickly, and with all the sweetness, I’m not sure I’d want to.
eczematic (1198), Sydney, Australia May 1, 2008 thanks to kook for being sucked in to trade this excellent beer for my dodgy homebrew. well i like this much more than the oaked version i had 18 months ago. at room temp - chocolate fudge and vanilla, rum aroma. in the mouth surprisingly not over the top and quite balanced, in the sort of way that an elephant and a dugong probably both look equally big to a gecko. dextrinous but not sweet, chocolate and melanoidins devoured first by burnt slices of toast, then by piney hops that come to pick at the carcass. tasty, but yeah, a lot of breweries can make a tasty imperial stout. wilkie (1189), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA Apr 27, 2008 Bottle at WBF in Raleigh. Black pour, with a brownish, tan head. Aroma is full of dark malts, chocolate, coffee. Flavor is similar, with a slight it of alcohol in aftertaste. Very sweet finish, with some bitterness from hops and malts. Very good beer. Guinness4Duff (507), Tallahassee (and Poconos, PA), Florida, USA Apr 24, 2008 Dark black pour with a thick very dark brown head. Scent has coffee, vanilla and chocolate notes shining through. All the above plus some caramel present themselves in the flavor, along with a noticeable alchohol bite. Smoky and dry roasted finish make this one outstanding. I think this might be better than the oak aged version. CapedBrewsader (260), Brasschaat, Belgium Apr 23, 2008 12oz. bottle: Pours inky black with a dense and tall brown head. Wonderful rich dark roast malts, deep dark roasted cocoa beans, regular chocolate, some coffee, and some wood ash. There is also quite a bit of hops in the nose that balances very well with the chocolate roast and sugared, dried fruits. Big "C" hop flavor and bitterness grabs you just before roast and dark malts thunder in. Full mouthfeel with big hop and big roast. The hops stay throughout but definitely get covered a little by the dark roast in the middle. Alcohol starts to come in and combine with the hop to take you to a somewhat dry roasted hop finish. Big beer with big flavors, but it could use some more interest in the middle. craftycarl21 (513), South Hero, Vermont, USA Apr 21, 2008 motor oil black, brown head with good duration, nice lacing. aroma of toasted hops, espresso, dark chocolate, and some raisin hints as well. similar taste, but coffee and chocolate comes to the forefront- nice to have a stout that has a taste differing from its aroma. nice mouthfeel, lingers nicely on the tongue. overall a very tasty beer.
